Where and when are the best times to catch monster sails?

G'day Cade, The north of Western Australia around Broome and Exmouth have some monsters with a few little ones thrown in to make a mess of it when the multiable hook ups are on. Best time is in August Sept and Oct.

Costa Rica and Panama have fantastic sails early in the year. Jan-April is good. Florida's sails (although smaller than the Pacific fish) also thrive from Nov. to April. Miami, the keys and Stuart and great places to fish for sails.

There is no better place to catch monster sails than Angola - Africa. With 8 world records for atlanctic sailfish, including all-tackle with a remarkable 64 kg sailfish caught in february of 1994.

Angola or Senegal on the west african coast , both offer big fish , Senegal is probably easier and cheaper .

Go to www.sailfishbay.com --and book at least 4 days of catching. I've caught over 100 sailfish on a 13 weight fly rod over the last 3 years of fishing there. Go in Jan or Feb. Last Feb my fishing buddy caught 108 sailfish and 2 blue marlin (350 and 600) on conventional (Scott Segal from Chicago) and my boat caught 65 on a fly in just four days of fishing!!!!!I can tell you there is no place on the planet that can boast those numbers. It is only a 2 and 1/2 hour flight from Miami. Africa takes forever to get there and there is no guarantee. Call sailfish bay lodge for guaranteed sailfish catching.------Jeff "ducttape"Morrow jeff@jeffersonmorrow.com

Clearly the best on the planet-------Guatemala. Old "ducttape" can't spell. Caught more billfish there than anywhere else in the world with Capt Brad Philliphs

Just got back from Costa Rica --- One black marlin on fly (200 lb), 22 sailfish on fly, and one roosterfish on fly-------still was not as hot as Guatemala (correct spelling). Thanks for reminding me Al. It was Al Miller who caught the 500 lb Blue and the 350 lb Blue and Scott Segal was his partner on the Pelgian with Brad Philliphs (who I believe is Number two in the world). Together these 2 anglers caught 108 sailfish in 4 days. I was a witness to their incredible catch. Not one billfish was harmed. If you want the best sailfishing in the universe, call me and I'll give you the phone numbers to call-----Jeff "ducttape" Morrow Jacksonville, Florida U.S.A.

Y'all are missing the point. He asked about MONSTER SAILS, not hundreds of little sails bitty Guatemalan sails.

If he wants BIG sails, he needs to go to AFRICA - Not Guatemala.

Read the question before answering.

Re: Guatemalan sails - Capt. Ron Hamlin released his 20,000th sailfish and ended the year at 2000+ fish.

Hi guys:

Well, I think that for real Monsters we are talking about 500 pounds and more, is Australia and Panama. I have a very good friend that went to Cairns and he told me the big experience that he had.

Guatemala, my country, for me is the best for Sailfish, Marlin we have of course, but not the size and quantity that you are looking for.

I had a very nice people fishing during the weekend, a Father and Son, and we caught Sailfish of 120 pounds, so in Sailfish we are the best!!!, for Marlin is Australia, Panama or Africa for sure.

My very best,

125 lb sailfish in Guatemala are large to me since I'm a Florida boy where the sailfish are around 40lbs. I've caught some large ones there on my kayak. Haven't ever seen sails much larger than 150lb except one 175lb caught in the Southern Sailfish Association Tournament a few weeks ago in Guatemala--- www.SouthernSailfish.org --Africa must have some huge ones.

After hurricane Wilma in Cancun we only had a few charters but the fishing has been next to incredible although we have done some fishing our selves in November & December everything was dead in the hotel strip tourism wise. We did a lot of bottom fishing during these months. Amberjacks literally sent us home dead tired. The first day we had 70 of them and three sharks late November and it was like that for the whole month of December but the down side was it was very windy most of the month. We had 12’ to 14’ swells. In all we fished probably 5 days only. The big news is that we have been getting lots of SAILFISH. The high winds from the north pushed big bait balls closer to Cancun than they usually are at this time of the year. The run to them is 12 miles if that which beats the usual 50 mile run that we usually do during January & February and we have been averaging 20 to 30 sails per day, however, we still have days with a lot of wind we had to cancel a few times.

a big hello to all
no offense, but Marlinhunter is right, to get monster sails, real big ones, you have to cross over , here on the atlantic side, i run offshore charters on the dominican east coast, sailfish averages 35-60lbs, over 60 is rare, we have plenty of them november to end january, but no monsters.
good luck to all

dec. is the first month of four months that we call our high season, not unusual to land 8 sails a day in dec. this applies for the quepos area, other regions differ greatly.

Guatemala in March experienced the sailfish bite of the century---Hamlin with 125 in one day conventional and Sheeder with 57 in one day fly with several 140 lb on fly 20 class tippet (IGFA world record is 130 lb on 20). Guatemala has a total "No Kill" law so they cannot be weighed on shore and therefore will NOT be in the IGFA record book.

EVEN GOT BIG ROOSTER FISH OFF THE ROCKS RIGHT OUTSIDE THE ************************. HAVE BEEN THERE 3 YEARS IN A ROW, AND HAVE ALREADY MADE MY RESERVATIONS FOR 2007

Quepos has the pending all tackle record for pacific sailfish. Was caught aboard the "Wateratz". You can book this boat at http://fishingqueposcostarica.com along with many other fine boats.
