Why do most charter boats seem to depend on a furuno sounder as opposed to Garmin or Lowrance units? Or is this a thing of the past?

I have a furuno 667 color sounder (i think) and I was wondering if I would be doing a bad thing by replacing it with a Garmin 2010 with a fish finder attachment, That way I have the GPS and sounder in one unit. So are the older furunos that much better at doing thier job?

Not sure what the problem is. You can buy excellent sounder/gps' from most manufacturers. The only criteria as i see it is price. I have a Raymarine L265 that i just replaced with a Humminbird Matrix 37 with quadrabeam, gps and weathersense for $480. That is in addition to my Garmin gps/fishfinder. Colour, B/W are other issues to look at though saltwater depth was my major buying concern after price.

I'm trying to find a web site that compares fishfinders so I can make a better decision on what to get. Any ideas?

I make my living with my fishfinder- simply put, you can't beat Furuno. The customer support is unmatched. These guys eat, sleep and drink fishing- REAL FISHING not just lakes. Spend the money on your depth finder, a GPS is a GPS is a GPS

My friends and I have gone on many charters to the Tortugas and have found the best value is Andy Griffiths. We have been doing this for the past 5 years trying every one who is the so called "best" in the industry and no one even comes close to Andy's fleet. The price, the fish, the accomodations and the captains are excellent.
