What is the best spot, anywhere in the world, to catch a marlin the first two weeks of August?

In regards to your question some of the most productive locations will be Cabo for Striped Marlin, Venezuela for White Marlin, Kona for Blue Marlin, and Australia for Black Marlin. Each local should give you daily shots at these species; 3 to 5 days of trolling are recommended as you don't catch them every day. Like any place the more days you can put in, at the right time of the year, with an experienced crew, the more likely you are going to catch what you are after. You have chances at other billfish species each day as well. Your highest probability of return for your investment (time spent trolling and money) will be Cabo. It's hot then in Cabo (95 -105 F daily). Cabo has a good sailfish bite in August also and there are occasional blues. The squid should not be a problem. Go to the Pisces and Cabo Magic websites for historical catches during that month. Also, there is particularly good swordfishing (they are not marlin of course but a highly prized billfish none the less) offshore of Fort Lauderdale that time of the year with Capt. Kevin Kates and the other fellows in the area (been there and done that too). They head out at sunset and drift in the Gulf Stream. It's not hot at night. Both my boys got their first swordfish with Kevin. Good luck with your August trip. WB

CONSIDER THIS: EL NINO, IN FULL EFFECT...NOTICE THE STRANGE WEATHER THIS YEAR? THAT IS A CLUE (ALONG WITH OTHER TRENDS AND PATTERNS)...
IN AN EL NINO YEAR, THE JET STREAM SHIFTS SOUTH...THIS CAUSES OREGON TO GET COLD STORMS THROUGHOUT SPRING INSTEAD OF TROPICAL...IN THE '83 EL NINO THERE WERE CONSISTENT REPORTS FROM EXPERIENCED FISHERMEN OF STRIPED MARLIN CRUISING THE WATERS OUTSIDE THE GOLDEN GATE (AROUND THE BLUE WATER)...IN CABO, THIS MEANS THAT MONSTER BLUES AND BLACKS MAY NOT EVEN ENTER THE SEA OF CORTEZ...OR STAY RIGHT AT THE MOUTH (NEAR CABO)...
BE SURE TO WATCH WEATHER REPORTS WHILE PLANNING YOUR TRIP...I AM NOT CLEAR ON HOW EL NINO MAY EFFECT THE CHABASCO (HURRICANE) SEASON...GOOD FISHING

I gaurantee you this is nothing like `83. That was a very profound change. We had Red crabs.Thresher Sharks.Sheepshead,Swordfish.Bonito heck,if it wasn`t supposed to be there,we had it,including cobalt blue water a mile off the beach in Morro Bay, CA. Everything is a month behind this year including water temps.NOAA is reporting the mild El Nino has gone to neutral status.I DON`T KNOW EITHER.

Madeira is having a great year with Marlin being seen and tagged each week. Average size is around 500 - 600 lbs. New daily fishing report will be online from August 1st 2005 if you want to follow the progress. http://www.madeira-tourist.com/fishing/madeirafishingreport.html

Punta Cana is the Only world Class Fishing Destination that still remains a Secret, thatīs why there are many tournamets held here in July and August and the ESPN Billfish Extreme Tournament is celebrated in Cabeza de Toro Punta Cana.

Papua New Guinea. I've heard they get a solid run of 200 to 400 lb blues at that time of year, in the huon gulf. Lae is the port. up to 8 shots in a day.

North Drop off the Virgin Islands. However I should recommend basing yourself out of Virgin Gorda in BVI instead of the more usual St John, USVI approach. Why?
North Drop is less than an hour from Gorda against some 3 1/2 hours from St John. More fishing time each day. Plus there are some VERY productive spots around BVI that the USVI skippers seem not to frequent for some reason. Full moon is the 23rd of August, but dark moon (second best) is on the 9th. That's when and where I'll be this year. On the Mahoe Bay with Skipper Sonny and mate Shaba out of Leverick bay, Virgin Gorda. And if you don't enjoy the Marlin, there's tarpon, bonefish and permit around the bays. Fishermans Heaven!!
