View Full Version : sea ox boats
Does anyone know if sea ox boats are still made. If so were are they made and how do you reach them. I would like to by just the boat and no motor. I have an outboard already.

They are no longer made.
The past owner canned the line and started up World Class Catamarans

Well not so quick - After the Original company was closed and auctioned off two other companies tried to keep it going. Both failed in less than two years. I know why the last one did cuz I bought a 2001 - 23 foot cuddy. Biggest piece of junk on the water, had to dump it quick and I did! I know own a 1988 - 18' its a tank!
the sea ox is no longger made. thay use to manufacter a stone throw away from the boston waler plant. i have one

I had a 1979 20 CC for 18 years - fit and finish were fair but the hull ifself was solid as a rock. In fact the guy I sold it to still uses it several times a week - not that many '79's still around that look and run so well. Towards end things really went down hill - made Sea Cats but again fit finish were only fair.

Sea Ox was a great boat. There are companies that have lines that are based on the hull. From what I understand Jones Brothers Cape Fisherman (NC Built Boat)is actually the old Sea Ox mold.

Just bought a Sea Ox 250c after some in depth research.
Seems that some execs from Grady White decided to split off and make some boats on their own. They started North American Fiberglass and made Sea Ox boats. Made in the same tradition as the GW's, these babys are tough. Overkill in the manufacturing process made these things practically indestructable and expensive to build.
I actually saw my boat at the Jacksonville Boat show a few years back for sale from a broker for 30k. It is a 1994(last year of production) 250c Blue water pro. This walk around cuddy is powered by a monster 7.3L V8 Mercruiser mated to a Bravo 3 outdrive with counter rotating props. When I saw it at the show the boat was pristine. All decked out with gear, it was a steal at that price. I had just bought a boat a that point and could not see a good reason to go for the gusto. I found out that the owner took the boat back and sold it privately to a guy in my neighborhood. The boat sat in the guys yard for the last few years. I saw him take it out maybe 5 times. One day I saw a "for sale" sign on the craft. I spoke to him a little about the boat. He bought it on a whim, already had 2 others and his wife hated it. So I had a motivated seller. I had a survey done on the boat, came through with flying colors. Surveyor gave a replacement cost that nearly floored me.
Long story short, picked it up for half of what a similar sized GW would cost. Only 300 ORIGINAL HOURS on the engine.
I still can't believe I found such a gem.
Need to be careful there were some boats made after 94 with the Sea Ox name, not sure about the first company but the second who was in Aransas produced some boats in 2000/2001 that were truely junk, beleive I know I bought one. I would have been better off in a 50 gallon drum!

There's a 23' cc for sale in Port Aransas, TX at Fox Yacht Sales. We owned the first one on the Gulf coast in early 80s. Wish we hadn't sold it. Great boat inshore and offshore.
My brother and I bought a 20cc w/yamaha 175 in 87, sold it to a friend in 97 who sold it to another friend in 03, I still see him out in it (Boca Raton), Rock solid boat, We bought a Worldcat 266 in 98, Great ride !
I've been watching a few go on Ebay for so cheap. I love my 1988 / 18' dual console, it is a tank. Running a Yamaha 130, top end 37 MPH. I have had several boats for 12-26 feet and this is the best ride yet.

I just bought this boat last week with a 1989 150 Johnson. It cut thru a 3 to 4 ft chop on Long Island sound this weekend no problems and topped out at 29 knots when things calmed down. I need to find some of the original owners info on this boat. I have no info other than the tag on the fuel tank reads a capacity of 79 galand the transom tag shows a max HP of 240. Can any one give me any additional info or tell me where I can get a copy of the owners manual or prints of the boat?

Graham Flanagan was original owner, from somewhere in the mid 70's. some of the hulls were Ray Hunt designed. Changed to Sea Cat in about '93-94 adn eventually to World Cat. USCG used som of the hulls as SAR.
Company name was North American fiberglas Co from Greenville NC.
I'm looking at an '89 Sea Ox 20' DC. The price is right. How's this boat? I heard that it was well built. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a 85 20' dual console
sea ox with 175 Johnson
Best boat I've owned,
For a heavy boat equiped runs mid 40's
Got caught in the Gulf off Texas when a
norther hit. Ran head on through 8
footers with no problem-very solid
I love my 1987 DC 18' - trail it anywhere and its a tank, running with a 1987 Yamaha 130 and she cruises at 32 mph nicely. Strongest most solid boat I have ever owned.

My dad and I have a Sea Ox 230c (1984) Walkaround Model. The boat is called the "Loan Shark."Love the boat for its ride, fishability, seaworthiness, and it is stable at rest. We do our fishing out on Lake Erie. Former Grady White employers started Sea Ox and I think that is great. Sea Ox boats built by North American Fiberglass in Greenville, North Carolina from 1977 to about 1992 can not be beat. Very proud to have a Sea Ox.

I have a 1980 20ft center console,200hp Merc, the thing is as said many times befor a TANK,it's the most overbuilt boat I think I have ever seen, and so stable at rest, the trade off it rides real wet in a head sea or into a good wind, just make sure the transom and floor are solid, mine were soft but I replaced transom and the floor also did the fuel tank (100 gal)at the same time, and yes I think Jones Bro's use a couple of the old Sea
Ox molds sure can't blame them, maybe selling the boat soon wife said I can't have 4 boats...

Just bought a 1982 230C with a 200 Johnson. Motor is 1981 so 25 years and still running great. Even though it runs great I am re-powering with a 2006 200 Suzuki 4 stroke. Enroute to the dealer for the retro the Sarasota Bay was quite rough today but not for the OX. I also just had her bottom done and she had little if any blisters. Having owned a 2000 Grady White 226 Seafarer with a 250 Yamaha 2 stroke I am much happier with the OX. She rides much dryer and smoother. With a little cosmetic uplift and TLC I think I'll have a great boat. I like this boat alot and look forward to many pleasant days on the water.

I was over at Chapman school of seamanship in Stuart Florida this past weekend and saw a sea ox. It looked to be about 22' long and was a walk around. It impressed me as sturdy. I think it may have had an engine on it. They take boats as donations and sell them for their operations. If you look up "Chapman School of Seamanship" you will probably get more information on the boat. I think they have photos of most of thier boats online.

I've owned my 20cc for about 5 years. I bought it obviously used but in perfect condition. I took it out of Rye Harbor, NH and sank it. I'm used to boats with 1 hull plug or 3 plugs, not four. Anyway, the boat flipped over but never went down (double hull) and a lobster fisherman towed me in. We some how uprighted the boat with a lift and a lobster trap winch and got it to the trailer. I noticed the missing brass plug, thanked everyone for helping me and quickly left. We replaced the spark plugs, added dry gas, thoroughly washed the boat and went fishing the next day. All the plugs installed. Tough, Very.
1984 Sea Ox 230c WA cuddy for sale. Freshwater boat. Excellant condition except needs a new powerhead for 235hp Sea drive outboard. Comes with dual axle galvanized trailer. Any offer will not be refused.

I have 1983 23' walkaround cuddy w/ 235HP Evinrude. Engine has low compression but boat's great shape.
I just got a 17' sea ox with a 60 HP Johnson and it will not plane. Dose anyone have this boat and if so will it plane and what size engine is on it. I know the boat is heavy but it should plane.
To Steve...I have a 23' Ox now for 16 years. The Oxes were built like tanks. Yes, they are heavy but powered right they will move. It may be one of the best riding boats around. You really cant compare the Ox to a Whaler. The Oxes produced after 1990 had a deeper V than the older ones. Whalers are much flatter so the will pound, and you will feel it. I wish I could find a 26 for sale that is well kept, but there are none to be had. Now that was a monster of an offshore boat.

Awesome boat...tough as nails. Dry ride and cuts through the chop like a red hot knife on butter. Only problem is my live well. With such a heavy boat and a 400 lb O/B, when I fill my transom live well, my scuppers drop too low and I take on water. I need to move my batteries up into the console. Other than that, I couldn't be happier.

I had the same problem with my 18cc I changed the scuppers to the ping pong ball style and it helped out allot. You can allso get plugs for the scuppers but that defeats the purpose of having them.STILL A GREAT BOAT Nothing compares to an old Ox

If you like the rugged construction and simplicity of the old sea ox boats you should check out a company called Privateer. They are made in Belhaven, NC. They are built heavy and very minimal on the frills. They are not as fast as some of the new boats but they will last.

I came across a 1978 Sea Ox 22 foot center console with a 1981 Evinrude 235 outboard on Catawaba Island on Lake Erie. The boat was in very rough condition and needed lots of work but was loaded with great potential. I loved the carolina flair and lines on the boat and bought boat motor and trailer for $1500.00.
I brought it back to my shop and started to work on the boat, the glass content of the hull really impressed me and I have worked on hundreds and hundreds of boats. I have since gutted the boat and installed composite stringers and a composite floor. I did not like the cut out transom so I put in a solid composite transom with a Stainless Marine swim platform/engine mount.
The boat handles like a dream and will take what ever Lake Erie throws at her. The ride is very dry and smooth, it is a pleasure to operate. I love the boat and very proud to own her. I would highly recommend the early Sea Ox boats to anyone. they are a true hidden GEM!!

:idea:To Jim:
My family used to have a 19 1/2' (70s model wood Grady White) with a 120 HP Chrysler inboard/outboard. We lost the prop on it while night fishing and had to replace it. The boat never planed right after that because the replacement did not have the proper pitch and after several adjustments, we could never get it right. As odd luck would have it, about a year later, a local fisherman recovered our prop with his fishing nets (we worked on the boat so much, we recognized the barnacle patterns on the prop). We installed the old prop and she planed beautifully. I'm not saying it will be as easy as replacing the prop but if you can get one with the correct pitch(based on the manufacture's OEM recommendations), it may be worth the extra bucks to try it out. Good luck my friend.
Hi Guys, :gr_cheers:
I just bought my second sea ox, a 1988 sea ox 20' Dual Console. I love it! I had a 1988 Sea ox 18' Dual console and loved that boat too.
After I get some more time on the boat, and in different sea conditions, I'll report back on the 20 compared to the 18. (OK, I've had some time on the water and I can't tell people to sell their 18' foot DC to buy the 20 DC becasue it's 10 times better. The 20 is larger, has a huge insulated fish (or beer locker) and handles the waves a little better but I think my 18 was such a good boat that the 20' can't possibly make me say that the 18' was anything but great. I have nothing bad to say about the 20' and the thing I love most about it is that the scuppers or the deck are higher so my feet don't ever get wet like they did in the 18. I run a Merc. 135 and almost didn't by this 20 DC becasue I thought it would be underpowered, I was wrong. Don't get me wrong, on flat calm days I could use more speed but who couldn't? The 20 DC can hold up to a 240HP outboard engine for all you speed guys. I also think there's enough room on the transome cut out to install a kicker motor on the side of the main motor. I'm not 100% sure and it would depend on the size of your main motor, but I don't think you would need a kicker motor bracket bolted to the stern transom. Anyhow, I love my 20DC!)
Someone asked about the gas tank size, I believe the 20' has an 50something gallon gas tank.
I'm going to make up some new sea ox decals so if anyone wants to buy some, let me know!

Well I Must Have A 1985 Sea Ox That Was Built On Friday.after Noticing A Rattle Crack Type Noise In The Hull After Coming Back From Striper Fishing.we Pulled The Inspection Panel Off Over The Fuel Tank And Noticed.the Floor Had Seperated From The Stringers.and After A Further Look Sea Ox Had Only Tabbed Glass Off The Hull To The Stringers Only 4 Inches.that To Me Is Some Pretty Crappy Glass Work.if It Was Me I Would Have Rolled The Glass Over The Top Of The Stringer Off Of Both Sides Before Setting My Second Mold(the Floor Cabin Mold).im Not A Boat Designer But As Far As Im Concerned The Stringers Are The Heart Of Structure.and When They Rot Your Floor System Is Shot.has Anybody Else Noticed This ?i Also Own A 24 Albemarle And Im Not Trying To Compare.

I am in Denver,
I recently bought a Sea OX 230C. It has a re-powered 225 Evinrude on it with maybe 15 to 20 hours. I propped down to a 13 at the suggestion of the mechanic. My issue is I still can't get the RPM's up over 4000 and my top speed is around 20 MPH on a GPS.
Any suggestions or ideas? The mechanic says the compression of the motor is great. What speed should I be getting? I know elevation could play a factor.
Also this boat seems to sit with the front section lower in the water at rest than the back. Is this normal? Water collects in under the floor of the cuddy. It fills up slowly until it reaches the auto bilge that's located under the floor just outside of the cuddy. Is this normal? I can't figure out where the water is getting in.

That is a beautiful 23.
I have a 1989 250C and I have had it since new. Just a rock of a boat, great fit & finish, dry ride. Twin Johnson 140s, also 1989, on an Armstrong bracket push it to 39 MPH with a full tank of gas, 160 gallons if memory serves. I don't recall the prop's pitch. Next time I pull the boat I will look.
I had some minor stress cracking where the live well & cooler met the deck but I had that fixed in year one and have had no problems since. Everything still works, livewell, washdowns, no leaks, no wiring problems, and the teak trim is an "old school" standout. Just the other day an Albemarle owner (with a beautiful boat) looked over the Sea Ox and said, "That's a boat you keep". Obviously, after 19 years, I must agree. What's not to like?
Nutmg1 the front of the boat should definitely not be lower than the stern & I get minimal water in my bilge.

I have a 1986 20' sea ox It is powered by twin johnson 90horse engines. Both engines turn the same direction. I have ben told that one engine should be a counter rotating engine. Is this true. Secondly I would like to repower this boat with just one engine. Any suggestions on the engine size I should go with.
Thanks
Dave
Nutmg1 - I have the same boat you do. Mine is a '91 Ox with an '07 250 Suzuki four stroke. I am the original owner and bought the boat with a 225 Evinrude. With a 13" prop that engine would scream at over 6500 rpms which would blow your engine in no time. Your mechanic is ill advising you. Are you sure all the pistons are firing??? It sounds like you might be running on 5 cylinders instead of 6. I had a 15X17 on mine and would top off at about 5300 which gave me about 37MPH. I get 42MPH with the four stroke.
The boat tends to be a little bow heavy and I had the same water issue that you have. I used to get rain water in from the rear hatch which was not water tight which I later replaced. I also have a removable compartment which is flush with the deck under the helm which drains into the bilge. So I had a little rain water from there. The cabin also drains into the bilge so if you're washing the cabin, that water will drain into the bilge. Check the drain hoses to the bait wells and fish box. I had a hose crack from age which leaked water into the bilge. Now becuase I relpaced the rear hatch and because the four stoke is heavier than the two stoke it sits perfect now and I get no water in the bilge. Any water I have flows to the stern. The boat rides much better now as a result of the added weight to the stern. I had the boat out just this past weekend and was slicng through a 4' chop at about 26MPH.
To alleviate the water issue try to keep the cabin light. We all have a tendancy of using the cabin for storage. Check all the deck plates and rear hatch. Also, get rid of the 13" prop. What you have is a power problem that needs to be rectified then use the 15" prop.
Hope this helps.
