I'm not a super fisherman but would love to hook up a wahoo. I fish off Islamorda in my own boat 8-10 times per year. But am not sure about bait, speed, rigging & location. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Bait could be ballyhoo rigged with wire or 49 strand cable leader. speed can be between 8 and 20 knots. Wahoo can swim much faster than that, I have strikes at 19 knots.
But you will catch them at 8 to 10 knots. All the stuff you hear about high speed trolling is not necessary.

get some planers and run a couple corner rods deep with some small trolling lures. run cable a foot on each side of your planers and mono to your lures...you may loose one here and there, but the amount of bites makes up for it.

I would say you definitely need to use about an 18 inch wire leader from the lure or bait to prevent bite offs. I have fished for wahoo in the Bahamas using heavy mono and the lure will get bitin off more times than it is worth. A short wire leader will save many headaches. Large rapalas, yozuri bonitas and shiny jet heads with lead work great. Ilanders rigged with ballyhoo work very well, also. I you can add weight to get the lures down you will have better success. 10-12 knots is ideal, in my opinion. Do not use a wire leader that is too long or the fish will bite off the rig were the wire joins your line.

We have been catching wahoo everyday for the last 2 weeks here in the Abacaos. 3 lures have been catching most of the fish. Any color combination will work, but blue and white, blk/orange, blu/org, pink/whit,have been the best. Black Barts, Crooked Cay Candy, and mahi candy on the shotgun. We changed the hook thing a little, but Jack at Black Barts can guide you in the right direction.

Caught a wahoo on a slow troll from a Briggs and Stratton powered outrigger banca at the Rapu-Rapu Island Channel, Bicol region, Philippines.

Used a four feet long seven strand 90 pounds steel leader and a Rapala Magnum Pink Mackerel Cd-18. It struck the lure at 4:30 p.m. and was boated in five minutes. The lure suffered minor damage from teeth punctures/cuts. Looked like someone carved some scales on one side of the plug.... there were scratch cuts in the bottom too.

I would recommend a Halco Lazer Pro 190 DD Flaming Hot and Yozuri Hydro Magnum Dorado green and gold.

Live or dead bait on the down rigger scored last week several 20 kg fish, the best one was 36 kg a monster.

We catch over 500 wahoo a year and have found that if you want to catch more wahoo you need to do 2 things. First, run a deep diving minnow (we use River2Sea Downsider 200) a fair way back so that it gets deep. Second, put a stickbait way out the back (100 yards or more).

We guarantee these 2 lures will receive 70% or more of your strikes.

DO NOT USE TREBLE HOOKS!!! They lose fish.

See www.nomadsportfishing.com.au for stickbaits and rigging details.
