View Full Version : Okuma T50W Titus
I'm thinking of purchasing one of these but want to know how they are in a fight with 80-150 pound tuna. I will be using it to fish off of a plateform rig so there can be no chase. Will they withstand the battle.

The overall consensus is that they are a poorly constructed unit with numerous failures on fish like the ones your after.
I was gld to see a reply. I have since had the opportunity to put my hands on one of these reels. I did not like the fact that as you add drag the reel gets harder to crank. I can just imagine once you put a load on it you would probably be forced to start hand lining your catch up. I think I will stick to one of the more tried and true reels. Like the Penn 6/0 or larger.

Bought one of these, and the drag seized on its first trip out. Not even fighting big fish, it landed eight small yellow-fin tuna's, between 30-50 lb's, before becoming totally useless.

The Okuma question comes up a lot. When someone asks me, I recommend waiting, saving a few extra bucks and purchasing an Avet or Shimano. For the extra $$$ you will not go wrong with either of these brands. The Avet or Shimano reels will last you a lifetime, the Okuma you will end up throwing away, they just don't hold up.
To me it makes no sense to spend 300 bucks on a disposable reel, when I can buy something my grandchildren will fish with for an extra $150.

I get sponcered by Okuma, I am very happy with the Titus Gold series. Even though I get sponcered I still have to pay for the Gold Reels and I have had good luck with them, as far as the other Okuma Reels most are junk.
I own T20s's and they are my favorite reels "over Avet, Penn". This past season I put those reels to the test, catching Yellowfin, Albies, and Dolphin I worked the reels hard with no problems. I also use the T50w2 and that is a great reel with a smooth drag. I have been using Okuma Golds for 5 years now catching all kinds of sportfish "Shark, Tuna" as long as you lube the reel and treat it right it should give you years of trouble free fishing.
One of the best reels on the market today is the Shimano 50LRS "Long Range Special, a 50 class reel with 80 class gears and drags. The only thing is these reels cost twice as much near $600.

CaptKevin,
In regards to your comments about the Shimano Tiagra 50WLRS. I have to agree with you 100%, I use all Shimano both the 50WLRS and the 30WLRS. Both are excellent reels but the 50WLRS is a solid reel when it comes to Big Game fishing.

I own the Okuma T50W and last September landed a 200lb blue fin. Didn't push the reel too hard and took my time. Not even a hiccup. Thing worked great for me.
