View Full Version : Would you buy or use a satellite tag

Lets be honest, fishermen spend a fortune in pursuit of billfish and often own a lot of expensive gear.

I wondered who would buy and carry a satellite tag in their kit if they were available to buy at a reasonable price and easy to deploy?

As a proportion of the cost of a five-day billfishing trip, I guess a tag would add under 2%. Say $200. Maybe less - especially if it could be subsidised somehow (grants, sponsorship etc).

If you didn’t catch, you’d still have it for next time.

What if, when the tag popped, you got copied in on the data from your fish?

I’d definitely be interested!

What about you?

The data would help fishermen and provide valuable data to assist conservation of the species.

Obviously, this is different from the Tag a Giant scheme as it allows anglers to deploy tags worldwide without the presence of scientists.

Opinions?

Nice question.

Certainly NO need for tackle or a craft. Just more clutter for a trip.

I've found ALL one needs to billfish are: Passport, airline ticket, substantial finances, travel bag and your charter (with B and B). A camera is nice but after awhile one looks just like another (if of the same species).

As far as Satellite tags not for me certainly; too high tech. I'm much more interested in when one is in the wake and all lit up. Regards to all. WGB

You don't even take your lucky lures with you?

I've got a few custom lures that the mates always want to try out.

A satellite tag would fit in a lure-case...
