There seem to be a lot of questions on the message boards about carry-ons. I suggest you email the FAA at '9-AWA-TELLFAA@faa.gov' and ask them to clarify their policy. The latest policy the have issued allows canes and umbrellas, no mention of fishing gear.

My brother just flew out to CA two days ago with a large 2pc rod tube for my 9wt. Midwest would not let him carry it on because it was closed at one end, however they would allow him to carry on a plastic rod tube. When we flew to Cabo neither of us had any problems carrying on our rods, the same tube. I think you would be better off contacting each individual airline to see what they will allow, because it seems that they may all be different.
I don't think you'll have any trouble if you are carrying on a 4pc or something simillar in size, but call just in case.

I fly with my 3 pc Sage and 2pc Orvis all the time. They examine them at the gate and I have never had trouble getting on board, as long as they fit into the overhead compartments. Stand in the airport in Great Falls or Billings Montana a most people will have travel rods in the simmer.

I have not flown in a great while. So, as I pack the bags for Kodiak, I am wondering what will happen when I show up at the airport. I have small pack rods that will fit in the overhead, but probably not in my carryon.. 3pc 7' TFO spinng, and a couple of fly rods in the 4 to five pc range..
I would rather have two piece rods, but they can't touch the floor, you can't put them in tubes, they have to fit in the overhead, they can be stored in the jacket closet, no problem hand carry them on without tubes,,,,.. WTH??? Like traveling is so easy we can expect confusion the day of departure..
I think I might, and probably will, drag the empty luggage out to the airport some early evening, including my fly tube, yet to be determined, and get the final say right then and there. So, when I show up in July I want all the questions to be already answered. My luck is that they will change the rules again before I travel.. Oye!!!
