So I read the article 'Bones on your own' (thanks very much) and decided to take my flyrod with me on a business trip to south florida.

I fished the ocean side of Ohio Key and Long Key last saturday and the ocen side of long key again on monday.

I saw and succcesfully cast to several singles and schools of BIG bonefish in both locations but the fish balked at every fly I tried. I was using a 12ft leader with 7lbs flourocarbon tippet.

To see such large Bonefish closly inspect a fly then turn away was both frustrating and heart-stopping.

Are these fish really that smart? Obviously that's how they got to be so big but geez. Can anyone share some tips.

Also, the distinct absence of smaller fish combined with the obvious fishing pressure makes me wonder about the future of the species in the area, hopefully this is just this well traveled location and things are ok in the backcountry?

Those Bones are tip of the ice berg of Bonefish schools and singles that run the gauntlet of anglers fishing from the outer reaches of the keys in. You will find some huge ones and they are most generally very angler smart.

Go early, stay late, fish weekedays, especially wed and thurs mornings, work with the tide and wind, use max stealth, the best technique in casting and presentation and more and if the Bonefish Gods are smiling, you'll get one or more.
