The Mantis Shrimp phenomenon ........

August to December is Mantis Shrimp season along the East African Coast from Pemba to just South of Dar Es Salaam. Billions of these little crustaceans rise to the surface to mate every year. This abundance of an easy nutritious meal attracts Giant Yellowfin Tuna from as little as 20 Kg's up to as much as a 100 Kg, Giant size Dogtooth Tuna of up to 75Kg's, GT's of up to 50 Kg's, Wahoo of up to 40 Kg's and Barracuda of up to 38 Kg's together with schools of a wide variety of other Game Fish and reef fish; too many to mention. (Have photos)

These feeding frenzied gamefish are being caught off the surface and down at 20 m's while drifting. You can't miss!!!

A COUPLE OF DESTINATIONS ...... To get into this action.........

Pemba Mozambique & north
Southern Tanzania

A COUPLE OF OPTIONS ...... To get into this action.........

Liveaboard Yacht charters with tenders
Land based accommodation with charter boats
Shore angling

and MORE ...

For the light tackle and fly fishing enthusiasts there is excellent fishing to be had from a boat in the estuary mouth area, in the estuary itself and wading the shallow flats inside of the main reef. The estuary is home to species such as River Snapper, Queenfish, Barracuda, and Estuary Cod. Wading the shallow flats one can sight cast to a variety of Kingfish, Garfish, Barracuda, etc.

Outside the reefs and along the drop-offs anything can happen if you’re brave enough. If you don's catch a lot of big fish, when nature makes it this easy, you haven't got a line in the water....

In fact Southern Africa is an awesome destination for serious fly anglers. From fresh water angling for Tiger Fish, Trout and Yellow Fish to saltwater angling off Cape Town in South Africa to Mozambique, Tanzania and Madagascar on the East Coast of Africa to Angola & Gabon on the West Coast.

Hi Greg,

Nice post, but you forgot to mention the North-east coast of SA and Richards Bay, specifically mentioned in an earlier issue of Marlin magazine that carried an extensive article about marlin fishing in Africa.

This recently uncovered hot spot is in fact so hot that it has been chosen as the venue for the 2008 FPIS World Trolling championship (for marlin) from 25Jan 25 to 2 Feb 2008.

Richards Bay and the Richards Bay Ski-boat Club specificaly is home to the annual Black Watch Billfish Tournament, now in it's third year and taking place from 1 to 4 Feb 2007.

In the 2006 event a total of 35 billfish including Blue, Black, and Striped marlin, as well as sailfish and Shortbill spearfish were caught and released in only 3days from 46 boats, half of which were small ski-boats that could not even fish half of the time due to a spell of adverse weather.
If that is not HOT - what is?

In 2008 the tournament is planned to take place the weekend before the FIPS in order to allow the visiting international teams the opportunity to either fish both tournaments or get in a few days charter as a practise run for the world championship.

Over and above the great fishing, Richards Bay and it's surrounding areas offer excellent opportunities for game viewing and or hunting safaris in the many excellent game parks and hunting ranches that abound in close proximity.

So there you have it guys - if you ever thought of doing a fishing and hunting trip to Africa do NOT pass over Richards bay.

Should you need more info you can either contact me through my website www.blackwatchsa.co.za or by direct e-mail to gamefish@netactive.co.za

I will post all the latest results on the website soon after the Tournament and have attached a recent picture of a 316 kg Blue to whet your appetite
