45,000 gulf coast snook died last year after release. 40% of the snook population must survive annually in oder to preserve the species. Right now, the number is at 32% and expected to drop another 5%. This decrease is due to an expected rise in anglers in Gulf Coast waters.
Snook held by their lower jaw die. The throat muscle tears. The fish cannot eat. We are inadvertantly killing our fish.
Even in this magazine there are pictures of mishadled fish. We as fly fisherman are ambassadors to proper catch and release fishing. Unfortunately, saltwater is lacking in such education
We need to change that. Myself included.
If you fish for snook, please help me spread the word. Let's work to preserve the fishery!
