Hi All,
I'm looking to upgrade from my current Orvis rod and have narrowed my options down to two rods:
Sage Xi2 9' 10-Weight
G. Loomis CrossCurrent GLX 9' 10-Weight

Can anyone give me some pros/cons about those two? Or, if anyone has any other rod suggestions, I'm open. Many thanks!!

Josh

Hi,
i've both, i love the Sage XI2 rods and they are my first choice for fishing with floating and intermediate tip lines, but i prefer the Loomis GLX Crosscurrent for heavy sinking line, the Crosscurrent is very stiff and it has a very fast action, you can use the 10wt rod with a 11line and it casts very well too.
The Loomis is stiffer and faster than Xi2 ,i've both in the same line class(10wt),so i'll use the Sage with floating and even intermediate line but i'll cast and i've a better feeling with Crosscurrent and a sinking line like Rio deepsea 300-400 grains.
Obviously this is my opinion ,everyone has a different casting style and rythm ,but i think everybody agrees that Xi2 is not fast and stiff in comparison of the Crosscurrent series.

I hope this help you,
bye

Many thanks, Bender. Would you say that, as far as casting distances go, you can cast the Loomis CrossCurrent farther than the Sage Xi2, with equally weighted line? Thanks again.

Yes,
the Crosscurrent cast very well your line size, the rod allows a large amount of line in the air and you never looses the contact with it ,it is a great rod for long distance cast.
In fact Crosscurrent needs a little more line( in comparison to Xi2),to feel the rod load , if you need a short casting range don't go with Loomis but with Sage, the first one is difficult to load without a good amount of line,so if you need a quick loading over size the flyline or go with Sage for quickshooting .

I hope you can understand what i mean...sorry for my english man!

Ah, thanks Bender. Don't worry, you're english is fine! In a perfect world, I'd be fortunate to purchase both the Loomis and Sage. However, I believe my current Orvis rod will do for short casting distances. It doesn't load so well, probably because it's definitely not too stiff. I just put Scientific Anglers intermediate line on it to see if that will help.

All of these concerns are coming from a great fishing trip with a guide who let me use his 10-Weight Loomis Crosscurrent GLX. I noted quite an improvement in my casting over my current Orvis 9-Weight. So, at that point I decided it's probably time to upgrade.

My other suggestion...i have bad rotator cuffs which limit my stroke length... a recent purchase of a Sage TCR 10 wt has been quite successful for flats fishing...with my casting abiity and shorter stroke it performs for me the best of all my rods that is 50-80 feet and lift 50-60 feet of line off the water...just have to get your haul timing right particularly the forward... try the 10 TCR not the other wt TCRs

I was personally very happy with my Orvis Zero-G fly rod. I had the Xi2 as well and though the Zero-G casted better as a 9 weight.

Personal opinion though.

YMMV

Before you jump, you might just want to test cast the new Winston BIIMX, a faster version of the BIIX. All signs point to a pretty impressive rod. I'm planning to add a seven and a twelve to my collection as soon as I can get my hands on a couple to try
