Which brand and size hook would be best for durability, non bendability, and sharpness for sailfish on the fly in costa rica. Suggestions for Marlin as well?

Here in Quepos Costa Rica, home to the Harry Grey fly tourney, our boats get tons of experience. The best hook they have found is a 6/0 gamakatsu octopus, rigged either single or double with the second hook reversed. Hope this helps.

Is it a 4x hook shank or normal shank gamakatsu? is it an offset point? Strait eye or dropped? So, 6/0 isn't too big for sailfish?
thanks so much for the help!!!

You don't need 4x hooks. Get the lightest wire you can. It hooks the fish better. Offset is good.

I've always used 3407 - 5/0 and 7/0 Mustad. But I've been playing around with
C70S Duratin 6/0 and the C71S 'stainless 5/0 Hookups on tarpon and sails have been much better than with the 3407's.

the 6/0 gamagatzu offset is good, owner makes a 6/0 offset w/ dropped eye that I found to be excellent. just make sure you hook the fish in the roof of the mouth and not in the jaw, as this will cut your fight time in half. watch your fish put the fly in his mouth and don't strike him too quick if he has only clamped down on the fly and has it pinched in his forward beak. buck fever blows a lot of shots. also remenber rod tip in the water when you strike your fish. good hunting.
