OK I am taking a trip to Hawaii in January (Kona, Big Island) and Maui.

I am staying at a hotel I stayed at before on the big island and they have a lago with a ton of fish (there is this inlet/flats type area with a bunch of fish) I did not have fishing gear last time but this time I plan to take my 8wt with me.

Now the question what kinda flies, has anyone fished HI surf/flats. I search the web but not much info, I hear they have big bones on Oahu but no info on Maui and the Kona info I get is for blue water species.

Any help would be very helpful. I have never fished HI before, I have fished the FL keys and flats in the Bahamas. Same flies? or do I need something diffrent I figured color wise I would (white sand VS dark to black sand)

Thanks in advance

I fished a few hours at Kanapali Beach with Crazy Charlies on a number 8 rod. I caught a sea turtle and battled it for a few minutes and then it surfaces so I could see it and then the line got cut clean by its bill. Next time I will be careful to not cast near any turtles. I was surprized it took a fly. I know there are a lot of turtles in Kona so be careful to avoid hooking one.
I will try fly fishing again in Maui and Kauai starting this Thursday. I hope I can get a fish this time.
