:) The Absolute Beginner's Guide to using the forums :)

I have come to realize that some of you are new to this forum stuff, and have been too busy fishing, as you should be, to catch up.

I compiled this quick glossary to introduce you to the forums and terminology everyone throws around that you may not be familiar with so that you may catch up and join the discussion!

Enjoy, and tight lines!

Forums: A collection of online discussions on any number of topics. From the main screen you choose (click on) an individual forum category to choose which topic you are interested in discussing.

Thread: A thread is just a discussion within a forum. If you are joining a discussion, you are adding to an existing thread. If you are starting a new discussion, you are starting a new thread. To do this, hit the New Thread button on the left of the screen.

Post: A post is a reply within an already-established discussion or a new discussion starter. To post within a discussion, hit the Post Reply button on the left of the screen.

Registration: You must register to post in the forums. Registration is free and easy and not a gimmick. Its main purpose is to keep spam ads and other Web junk off of our boards and make things better for everyone. When you register, you will be sent an email that you must reply to in order to post. Replying to this email is required and will not earn you any additional spam email or harassment.

Photo Post: We have a separate section of our forums just for posting photos. To go there, hit the Photo Gallery button at the top of the screen. To add your photos after you get there, hit the Upload Photos button on the top right of the screen.

PM: PM is short for Private Message. This is a system for communicating with your fellow forum members. Just click on a member's name and then "Send a private message to..." to send a PM. You have a PM mailbox whose status is displayed under your name on the main forum page.

Signature: This is a small bit of text and possibly a small photo that is added to the bottom of every post you make. Signatures add a degree of personalization and can point to your business if you have one. To modify your signature, go to the user control panel. ("User CP" button in upper-left of screen)

Avatar: The small picture you see to the left of some members' names in posts is an avatar. It is an optional personalization and can be added through the user control panel ("User CP")

Troll: A troll is someone who posts in forums just to make life hard for everyone - not to add to the discussion. Don't be a troll.

Great, now if I can get admin to release the parental control for a 51yr old poster (me), I can add to my profile. So far in a week of trying, it hasn't worked right. www.Sportfishermen.com is going get my business.
