Hi everyone I'm new to this forum. I am looking for suggestions for a bonefish line for a 6wt. rod. The rod I will be using is a 691-4 Z-axis. I am looking at Rio lines or the Sage Equator II line. I was wondering if anyone has fished the Z-axis model of rods for bonefish, and what line performs best on that rod. I know that the Sage line is made by Rio, but just wondering if anyone has had any experience with any of the different lines on these rods.

Dear Purdue,

I just picked up a Sage 691-4 Z-Axis last week. Planning on using it for trout fishing as well as bonefish, so one spool is loaded with Rio Saltwater Taper, 6wt. It casts smoothly, is easy to see (coral color), and welded loops make it easy to attach to backing and leaders. Let's keep things simple!
I like Rio lines a lot. I've found them more consistent and predictable casters than Sage lines or SA. Going to Bahamas in late June but wouldn't go without the 9wts; the wind is tough to manage with just the 6wt. Good luck with your new rod and let me know how it performs on bonefish.

Dear worcester95,

I'm also going to the Bahamas, but will be going the first of June. I also have an 8wt. Xi2, so I should be fine with the wind issues. I talked to a Rio rep asking him about the lines and he said really it is a toss up between the Sage and Rio Saltwater Taper. Rio makes all of the Sage lines, since Sage now owns Rio Products. I think I'm going to go with the Rio line, they haven't disappointed me yet. On all of the reels I have only one doesn't have a Rio line, that’s my Tibor Everglades that has the old Equator line on it. I didn't have any problems with down in the Bahamas last year. I broke my Z-axis in the other day on some smallmouth here around Purdue, and the rod handled beautifully, I can't wait to go after bonefish with it. Have fun with yours.

Take a look at Lee Wulff Bermuda Triangel Taper 2 Tone. I tried SA, Rios and Sage line but Lee Wullf line sticks out , handle the wind much better. Sorry for the english , i am from Sweden.

I've heard a couple of discouraging reports on the Equator Tapers by Sage, but know some folks that are sold on the Rio lines. Personally, I'd second the reccomendation for the Wulff Bermuda Triangle Taper. I've been using them for a number of years now and much prefer them over anything from SA.

I'm getting ready to take a trip to the Yucatan and looking to buy a 4 piece 6wt to accompany the 8wt XP that I have. We'll primarily be fishing for average size bones and I am trying to decide between the Z-Axis and the Xi2. I'm stuck far from the coast so would like a rod that I can fish fresh as well as in the salt. I'm leaning toward the Z-Axis and was curious about your experience with it on your trip. Did the Z have enough backbone? Your thoughts?
Thanks.

POV: Salt for over 35 years... but occaisonal smallie to keep me old arm in shape in the white river...rods TCR 9 and 10; RPLX 11 and 8'9"("bonefish") wt; Three piece XTR 11 and 12 wt. Lines RIO tarpon and bonefish; Airflo Ridge Tropic; Cortland 444 tropic plus all have worked for me but the Ridge Tropic on my TCRs really work and particularly on the ten wt TCR. I have fished Andros for over 30 years and never used anything less than an 8wt because of the wind...they are not line or leader shy if you get the fly to the fish...if it were me I'd leave the 6 for smallies on Tippy...Wildcat...take the 8 and get a 10 wt Xi2 if you like it... but go down to flymasters indy and try the 10 wt rods... if you have been there already and derick said he catches salt with 2 or 4 wt well...sometimes he has toooo much... how are you going to fish in the bahamas from a boat or mainly DIY wading if the former replicate standing on the bow... coil 50 feet of fly line on the ground hold the fly and about 11-12 feet of line out the tip.. then roll out of your hand and two complete cycles what's your distance to the fly? try it into the wind between a couple of the buildings where you get a good wind venturi effect.. forget the 90-100 demo stuff cause it takes to long and to much false casting to get there...IMHO
