Hi,
We had a custom spinning rod made for a Penn 9500 loaded with 60# Spectra made by Chris Red of Gulf Shores. Took it to Venezuela and caught one blue marlin and one large (tagged) white on it. Have left it down there. I had wanted three piece but he bought a 50-80 class blank and made it two piece so it would have more strength. I think you can take a basic heavy duty surf rod blank and have it custom built to spec; 2, 3 or 4 pieces. Make sure to have the top grip extend well up. For fighting fish we use a Sampo shoulder harness and loop a piece of 1/4 inch rope that goes from the clips of the harness to the rod, right above the reel, and a standard rod belt. You can fight a blue one handed by leaning back and then taking up line by bending forward. It works well for standup or for chair fighting. The blue was foul hooked by the pec and took close to two hours to get in. Go high grade with your tip and guides to handle all lines including spectra. Have fun. Warren Brantley
