I need some help.

I fish the northeast hard and am very new to fly fishing. I can cast (have taken some classes) and have a 10 wt outfit with floating line that I am going to be traveling with.

I will be in puerto rico and am staying at a resort that has a large fresh water river that flows into the ocean. It looks very fishy and I bet there are snook/tarpon in there. What flies do I use, do I need tropical line? I have never fished for snook/tarpon and am looking for suggestions as how best to do this. Where do I want to fish at the mouth or upstream?

There is also a barrier island (sand bar) about 100 yards off the beach that I can access via kayak. Any suggestions on how to take advantage of the situation would be appreciated, I dont want to lose an opportunity to fish and am looking on suggestions as to flies to fish, type of lines (floating, sinking, intermediate) and what times of the day are the best to fish (for what?).

Thanks
Stevie K

Stevie,

I would recomend contacting the hotel you are staying at and see if there any guides or charter companies they work with, If they do try to get some contact numbers and speak to them. As far as line you should use a tropical line, one that is designed for the species you are fishing for. For your fly selection you might want to try some good all around salt water, like decievers, shrimp patterns and streamers or bait fish. Hope this helps.:thumb:
