The fishing on Roatan at the end of March was very good despite the blustery conditions. March is a transition month weather wise and this year was no exception. Strong winds blew out of the east averaging 15 mph as a few storms rolled through and brought rain. April has been nicer with calmer winds and sunny skies that are great for spotting fish!

Scandinavian angler Jonas Andersson braved the tough winds at the end of March and found success landing a 27 lb permit. This fish was caught on a 10 wt tarpon rig and keys style fly, but still took a half an hour to land!

The bonefishing was solid in March as well. Fish up to 7 lbs were being hooked on the local flats. The bonefish on Roatan are larger than most of their Caribbean cousins and are definitely not push overs. These shallow turtle grass flats require study weedguards and flies between #8-12 on a 12' leader. Yes, I said down to #12! Flies that match the bottom colors, in brown or olive, are catching the most fish.

April has proved to a better weather month than March. Many bonefish and permit are being sighted cruising the flats. Bonefish are best on a moving tide and the permit like the high tides, especially those in the morning. Try crab patterns such as Enrico Puglisi's 3 tone crab #8 for those wily permit.

Colorado angler Sammy and his wife Weatherly found the fishing fantastic for their Easter vacation, with Sammy landing his first permit of 12 lbs! He also caught a number of good sized bones around Helene and also the north end of Barbaret.

The calmer winds has allowed the guides to explore the flats on the north side of the island. These expansive flats are lightly fished due to rougher seas on this side of the island. More trips are also being taken to the mangrove lagoons on the eastern side of the island in the lodge's new pedal kayaks.

Package rates drop to $1802 per person on June 1. Lucky for you there are not many tourists on the island in June and July and the fishing is still hot! There is something for everyone to do on Roatan. Fish the morning tides, spend the day with your wife, and back to the flats in the evening. The best of both worlds!

Tight lines!
