If there is a species of fish that you could take down on fly, which one could it be? If you have already taken down your dream fish, list that one. This should be cool. I know there's more of you guys out there besides me and Razorz.......

My dream fish.....Roosterfish. My girlfriend is promising me a trip to Cabo to try roosters on the fly off the beach. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

My dream fish would have to be a large Giant Trevally. The largest that I've landed so far was around forty pounds. I've had a few on up to around eighty pounds, but haven't been able to stop them before they cut the leader on coral. They are very aggressive and as hard a fighting fish as I've ever encountered. As a bonus, they are generally caught at some pretty cool places. I also get a little nuts over Golden Trevally. Casting to a fifteen or so pounder thats tailing in front of you and hooking it on a seven weight with a bonefish fly is also pretty exciting stuff.

Without a doubt, a Mako shark. Size does NOT matter!

Have you seen Conway's thing on ESPN lately? He talks about catching makos on fly.

Thought I'd share a New Zealand Marko with you caught on the fly I think in the Bay of Islands by a fellow fly angler...

Mako

As for dream salt water fish I have found pound for pound anything to compare with the Kahawai (sea salmon in Australia)... the pisctiorial pit bull, the brawn of a tune and the air acrobatics of a wild rainbow, found off the kiwi coast. Funnily enouph in New Zealnd SWFF is really only just taking off... we are more famous over seas as a wild trout destination but our coastline offers SWFF on the same level as Australia.

You can out more about SWFF New Zealand here:

Awesome pic, I did a very minimal retouch so you can see the fish better.

Good job, some day for me!

EDIT: I'll have to re-post the updated photo... hosting messed up it seems.

Definately Permit on the fly. I've caught them on spinning tackle, but not on fly yet. I would also like to fish for a Roosterfish as someone else said.

I think that more opportunity an angler has to fish and more fish become his favorite fish to catch and dream about, but i think isn't only question about the fish ,but also the scenario where a particular fish lives and where fishing is done.
I don't like open ocean ,but i love the flats, and bonefish and tarpon are (now) my obsession.
The earth is great and oceans are vast ,i hope to have enough money and time to live and flyfishing in every corner of the world to have the opportunity to discover other great fish like tarpon to dream about.

First things first. They are my images posted on another site and used in the above post.

Secondly if you want to catch these fish in NZ this is the man to do it with

www.saltflyer.com

Both the kahawai and the mako were caught while fishing with Nik. He is the BEST saltwater guide in NZ.

If you would like some more info drop me an email. There will be an article on Mako's in NZ in an Australian publication in the near future with the 'good' images from that trip.

Cheers
Mat

I would have to say a broadbill swordfish. It used to be the wahoo and dogtooth tuna, and have caught both. I'd say in my estimation, that the doggie is one of the most awesome creatures that swims in salt water. The wahoo have been somewhat disappointing, but we've hooked them while chunking, so they never were able to build up a good head of steam.
I've had a couple of shots recently at the broadbills, but haven't gotten a bite yet. Still working on it, although my friend Robert Trosset in Key West had his 18-year old son Chris hooked up to one not long ago.

Yeah it would be either Roosters or big yellowfin for me.I'd like to land a yellowfin near the 100lb mark on the fly.:)
