Hi,
i've a Tibor Gulfstream Q.Change rigged with 500yds of 50lbs XTS (Scientific Anglers) gelspun backing and i would like to know if it can damage the spool of the reel,in particular of large arbor ones.
The question borns because in the renewed web site of Tibor they indicate that the gelspun is not recommended in their reels ,so why does Tibor make his reels with Spool 2 configuration and indicate the capacity of the PowerPro for backing?

I would not worry about it too much, just don't crank down to 40# of drag. Fly reels, in general, are not built very tough and the stresses put on them by high strength and low stretch gelspun/powerpro style backings can cause damage to the spool. With a Tibor, I wouldn't worry about it too much. My new Abel will have Gelspun.

I would not worry about it....gelspun is good stuff. BTW, what is Spool 2? I saw it in their catalog but they don't really explain it. Is it a higher backing capacity reel?

I haven;t heard anything about that, and have asked the folks at Tibor to weigh in. When i get an answer, I'll let you know. I use Gelspun exclusively, and haven't had any problems other than the requsite line cuts.

The new spool(#2) is a larger arbor therfore, less capacity. Although you can pick up line quicker. I have seen the capacities quoted for the Gulfstream as:
Spool #1: WF12F + 300yds 30lb micron
Spool #2: WF12F + 300yds 50lb Tufline XP

Hi Capt Ted,
i also sent an e-mail to Tibor but i'm still waiting the answer,i'll see what Tibor says, maybe it is only a commercial tactic to support PowerPro:confused:

Here's the official answer from Tibor reels, Gail Schuler:
Hi Ted!
Thank you for your e-mail regardng the forum question about gel spun backing on Tibor reels. While we have always recommended Micron backing for our reels, we understand that many fisherman prefer to use gel spun for more capacity.
Gel spun will not damage the reel or spool, but when the fish runs there is a risk of cutting your fingers. (Because of this
risk, we cannot "recommend" gel spun).
However, monofilament can damage a reel as it stretches, putting pressure on the spool, which overtime can distort the spool.
Let me know if there are any other questions or concerns.
Best regards,
Gail

Interesting. If your are worried about it cutting your spool, lay down a little 30lb dacron underneath your gelspun.
