Hey everyone I am in need of some help/advice. I do some saltwater fishing, mostly surf-fishing in the outer banks. However I am looking into a wedding gift for my older brother who does most of his fishing from his boat. I know he trolls and he mainly goes for Striped Bass so nothing really huge. I don't know a lot about the equiment so i need some of your experience!

I am trying to decide on a reel, and I think I have it nailed down to two models based on lever-drag/2 speed:

1.) The Penn Graph-Lite GLD 30 2-speed
http://www.pennreels.com/01_products/reels/conventional/03_graph_lite_lever_drag/graphlitegld.htm

2.) The Avet EXW 4/02 2-speed
http://www.avetreels.com/avet_exw42.html

Are these reels way overkill for the application (~50 lb fish)??
Out of the two, which would you buy and why?

Thanks everyone for the help as I dont have much experiene with these types of reels.

Hello,

First of all the Avet 4/0 is discontinued and has been replaced by the 3/0 which is the same physical size but even more drag. I fish on average of3 days a week almost year round and got rid of the Penn graphites because within the first few trips I had problems as to the Avets not one. I have since added Avets 5/0 reels and the LX series for jigging. They are extreme precision and of much greater value for the money in my opinion noticeably better than anything Penn has to offer including the Internationals.

These reels are excellent for the fish class you mentioned and quite a bit more a lot more...

Hi there guys. Call me nonong. I hail from the Philippines and my favorite fishing technique is spin trolling....

May i suggest the Tica Cybernetic GG-100 spinning reel matched to a Pioneer GT Striker Spinning Rod rated at 30-50 lbs test.....

I purchased one last CY-2005 and this spinning reel has been performing consistently well for my trolling needs. It has taken in Indo-Pacific King Mackerel, Giant Trevally and Queenfish. There is a newer speed gear model and one of the guys at Fishing Buddy claims it brought in a 178 lbs. Marlin.

The Tica i am using is spooled to 450 meters of Sufix Tritanium "red" 30 lbs. test monofilament.

the avet for sure.

Super smooth and theres seriously something wrong with the newer penns...

Nonong, anwallac gave two choices, I dont see the reel you use in his question,

Please respect his post and stick with the program! if you don't have any experience with any of the two given, its best to leave it to those that do and read for your reference

Excuse me, railboie..... but i don't agree with your view of sticking to a program. It's a free country and i just gave my 2 bits worth as your westerners are likely to quote. Besides he might like spin trolling as an option and you are not a judge or administrator of this forum. Extending hospitality and respect to a visitor is an American Trait or am i mistaken in your case? I say a Tica Cybernetic GG-100 can do the job for his bro. Besides its cheaper in the long run.

There is much to learn from anglers around the world. Granted, the question at hand dealt with two choices, but the more information available and the more we all can learn is in the common good. Please be respectful of any and all positive contributions to the forum.
