Hello,

I am an avid trout fly fisherman in Colorado. My wife and I are going to Playa del Samara on the Pacific side of Costa Rica located on the Nicoya Peninsula.

I know I can charter big or small boats for large tackle fishing.

What I am looking for is guidance for surf, river, and inlet fishing, both on a fly and with spinning tackle.

We will be there for 10 days, and plan on spending all of the time on the pacific coast.

I am guessing my 4wt fly rod might not do the trick.

Any suggestion on type of tackle, type of species, and places to go, techniques, would be appreciated

If you are only going to take one rod each , I would go with a 10 weight and a 20-30 lb spinning rig. A day of fly fishing offshore for sails will be a thrill. If however you are only going to go it alone you can find good fishing form shore. Take some poppers, bonito lures, larger rapalas, and mirrolures. This will give you a good start on tackle.
Roosterfish and jacks (the usual suspects) patrol just outside the surf and are good in the early mornings or evening times. These two species are tough fighters.
