G'day Guys,
I'm looking for a reel or two for chasing Marlin and big Tuna. Have you got any advice on Brands etc.
Any advice appreciated.

Abel Super 12W is a great reel.
Also, the Nautilus line of fly reels have great drag and are built well for the money.
Tibor also makes several reels in this size category, the Gulfstream and Pacific.
I would agree that the Tibor pacific is up to the task. The Billy Pate Series Marlin reel is another option. The Abel Super Series are fine reels, but be prepared to spend some jack. The super 13 and 14 will run in the neighborhood of a grand.
The Orvis vortex may be an option is the much lower price range.

Try the Abel Super 14......have 2 or 3 I think and been into couple 300lb marlin (not landed) and a few Yellowfin tuna in excess of 100lbs(non-igfa, landed)
Only concern with any of the large reels is the drag but thats a whole different topic.

The Nautilus has the best feeling drag of any fly reel I have owned. I've heard the new Charlton Mako series is silky smooth as well. Tibor and Abel use felt washers for drag still if I remember right. Nautilus is a disk brake.

Thanks for the advice guys. I have my eye on an Abel 14 and a Scott rod 15wt. 700grain line etc. I have been offered a Steelfin Abyss and custom built loomis. I don't know much about those reels and can't seem to find a website or anything. Anybody know these reels or a webaddress?
Cheers Cam
Steelfin went out of business a few years ago. I am not sure if they reopened under another name, but a few companies on the west cost are able to work on and repair the equipment.

my vote is for the pacific tibor; smooth drag that will not over heat even when you tie on to a greyhound bus and the large diameter can help "big time" to get line back quicker when you need to do.

Charlton Mako 9700B isn't going to be available until June but when it is, it will be the finest big game fly reel of all time. :thumb:

Have ordered a Scott BW rod and an Abel super 14 and spare big game #5 spool. Will probably get a Loomis Fr9915-3 CC aswell and test them together. I have a Nautilus NV 9 and agree the drag is sweet! The fishing is really firing up at the moment and I can't wait to take delivery of my 2352 Trophy and get amongst it. Will post some pics of the end product. There are some massive Bluefish and Mackeral cruising around at the moment but I have an untouched Billfishery at my doorstep that needs my attention. Cheers Gents
P.s I'll have a look at the Mako reels when they are released here.
