4 strokes vs Evinrude Etec

Own a 1997 Grady White Islander with twin Yamaha 150 Salt water series 2,
fuel comsuption at average RPM is high and have been thinking or repowering but can`t decide between the new Yamaha 4 strokes or the Evinrude Etecs. Can some one give some insight..

I re-powered a 29 ft Fountain (tournament boat) that had twin Mercury 225, that kept blowing up, with twin Suzuki 200 4 strokes. Not only do these get the same speed but they get double the mileage and they are lighter. They are not even broke in good.( 35hour) They should get a little better mileage after a few more hours. Quiet is not the word for it. I pull up on a rig and forget they are running. You don't smell that oil/gas burning smell ether.


I have twin 90 4 stroke Suziki on a 258DLV Carolina Skiff. I had the chance to get the E Tec's but got the 4 stokes because of the reliability and long life of these motors. I have a friend with almost the same setup with the ETec's and our speed is within 2 mph difference. He is running 3 blade props and I am running 4 blade props. WOT for him is 6000rpm and I'm at 5500rpms. I get 1mpg better fuel mileage, which is 4 to 5 miles per gal. My 4 strokes are quieter at WOT. The weight difference doesn't really matter.

3 years without a maintenance. " WHAT A CROC". You have to take it in at least 2 times the first year, if you use it alot, to have the computer adjusted. There is no breakin because the computer is set to dump lots of oil in during this period. Thats why you have to have the computer adjusted now and again to cut down on the amount of oil. I got this info from a mechanic for ETec.

The only maintenance for the Suziki is the first oil change. They reset your computer, change filters and spark plugs and make sure there is nothing like metal in the oil or filter. After that you can do it yourself.

The 4 strokes Suziki is also cheaper to purchase. just my opion
