Hey guys new to the boards and have three questions.

I will be in Maui from April 14-21st and staying at the Kaanapali shores resort. I want to do some fly fishing from the beach in the am before the family wakes up. As far as I can tell you do not need a license unless you are a commercial fisherman and I haven't found any restrictions on shore fishing thus far.

So my questions are;

1- What kind of fish can I expect to get into from the beach? (perch, rock fish, etc)
2- What would be a good locale within walking distance or a 10min drive?
3- What kind of flies should I start tying?

My rig is a 9ft 5/6 wt and if need be I can take the 9.5ft 7wt.

btw, I am not interested in a charter boat or guide.

Thanks for your help!

Rich.

I'm from Maui-not a fly guy -but have fished for 20 yrs here-
I would say any of the rocky points within walking distance would be a good start-
you might catch bonefish,ladyfish ,barracuda, or trevally
if you catch the big one -look us up, as I specialize in Gyotaku Trophy Fish printing- check us out at gyotakumaui.com
Aloha and Good Luck
