View Full Version : Best tuna fishing
Where in the world..is the best tuna fishing in your opinion? This could be yellowfin, bluefin, big eye, black fin, albacore, kawakawa, etc....
since I am having a conversation with myself here, imho, I think the following are very solid choices
blue fin: Gloucester (NC is good also at times)
Yellowfin: Panama, Puerto Vallarta, Hawaii
Big Eye: Madeira
I look forward to http://www.sportfishermen.com/board/images/smilies/newsmilies/feedback.gif

OK: let's not talk poorly of someone who talks to themself........ That's my trade. Pays for three in college and some fishing. I'm not one who pursues tuna, to say the least, except: (1) as live bait for black marlin (2) in a can for lunch, or (3) draped over the side butterflied as chum. But Venice, Louisiana has had a decent fishery for a number of years on YFT with the infrequent monster (toad) bluefin. It can be followed through this site:

I personally would prefer their swords but when I called they were a bit pricey and one heck of a long drive from Montgomery, AL. And that was before petro prices tripled. I think I'll stick to Cabo with little YFT when the marlins aren't about.
Almost forgot to mention that I have spent the last 4 years avoiding them in Venezuela; pursuing billfish. I have seen masses of YFT in the 150 pound plus, plus range covering countless acres. Capt. Wilmer on 'Guarimba' (no longer on 'Joropo') will gladly put you on as many as your body can stand (which is not too many I've been told). Time for some Starkist...........
I agree with you Seth. The forum has lacked luster recently. Doc

Ahhh, Venice, how could I have forgotten. I do plan on making a run to the green canyon before long and my quest will indeed begin in sweet Venice.
I can remember as a little lad eating crawfish out of an old beer case box with my father the night before heading out to fish the delta. The rocking and bobbing of the boat and all those crawdaddy's in my belly...well, needless to say I got to spend the afternoon at what was the small marina in Venice all by myself. My father and uncle went out and finished the day fishing for snapper, sheepshead and whatever else they caught.

Of course i'm biased, but in all of my travels far and wide i've never seen the kind of abundance and quality we have here in Puerto Vallarta. We have a 90% success rate when it comes to yellowfin, that's hard to match anywhere else.
Josh,
What do you consider to be the peak season for YFT in Puerto Vallarta? Does this run congruent with marlin season? Thanks :gr_cheers:

I'd have to say that our peak season for the largest fish (by large i mean 200#'s and up) coincides with our black and blue marlin season...namely June - January.
While it is possible and certainly viable to expect yellowfin every day of the year down here, the largest fish tend to show during the aforementioned months. It's also important to note that we have an exceptional black and blue marlin fishery, something that is often overshadowed by the world class yellowfin bite that we are privy to down here.
I have not got any experience yet but I will go to try bluefin tuna fishing in Adriatic Sea in Croatia in September. I have heard that they catch big bluefins quite regularly over there.

Be sure to give us a report upon your return. :thumb:
Hey Josh,
What kind if rigs do you use in PV for the YFT? What are you raising the fish with and are you mostly using live bait or lures? Thanks!
