I just caught my first bonefish.. Not in your regular famous places but within 30 minutes of Honolulu Hawaii. I am a long time Fly Fishing in Saltwater reader and northwest steelheader and was suprised to find a fly shop in Honolulu, Nervous Water Fly fishers ( nervouswaterhawaii.com ) . Apparently there are fish in Hawaii being caught and released on a fly. Another local angler caught at least a half dozen in the 3 hours or so I fished. I tried to look up Hawaii in the Destinations page and couldn't find any info. Never have seen an article in the magazine or any other FF mag about bonefish in Hawaii. For the same money a flight to Christmas Island costs, a guy can take his family on vacation and afford to go fishing in a beautiful U.S. state, providing income for locals while there. Aside from what seemed to be a fishable bonefish population, there are Milkfish and many other species easily chased on Oahu. Flyfishing in Hawaii is not very popular so the flats are seldom fished with a fly.
Lastly, the Aloha spirit I encountered with the locals was truly a blessing.

P.S. The local flyfisherman was wading, using a 10' 6" switch rod and spey casting techniques, blind casting in the deeper parts of the flat.
