I was thinking about entering one of these pictures in a local photo contest.
Which one do you like the best?

Rick

Of the two shown, no:2 is better.

While I'm not a 'photo judge' I have some insight into what they will be looking for.

If its the sports/action section, they will be looking for movement, action usually with people in the shot (car racing photos seldom win sports sections).

For fishing, that would mean a straining fisherman, with bent rod, line going to the water and splash of the fish breaking the surface.

All the best.

Hi Rick,
First off, nice work with the shot. I am of the opinion that #1 is the better of the two. The second is cropped too much in my humble opinion. I do like the black border.

I agree with Seth the second one is cropped too tightly. However, I think the first one is a little cluttered; maybe if you cropped out just the very bottom two poles (keeping the reel or at least part of it in the frame), it would feel looser and give a better result. However, these things are subjective...as evidenced by the answers given so far. If I had to pick one of the two, I'd say #1.

2 is the better of the two. One doesn't have a main focal point so it comes across a bit muddled. 2 has clear lines and the eyes follow the image cleanly on the diagonal.
