Hello gentlemen. I am tying up a series of tarpon flies, primarily for the Stuart, florida area, and have a question regarding length of fly/hook size;
In the past, I used to tie my tarpon flies on a Gamakatsu SC15 hook but have now converted over to a Mustad Signature Series C68SZ Tarpon hook. Now the Mustad hook is a shorter shank than the Gamakatsu hook and I'm wodering if that will have a drastic effect on the profile of my fly. For example, during my research, I have come to learn that a 2/0 and a 4/0 seem to be the most popular size fly in the area. The shorter shank of the Mustad hook seems to create a squattier fly than say the Gami hook would. Primarily, there is less area to create the long "nose" of the fly, thus reducing it's overall profile somewhat.
Therefore, for those who regularly fish for tarpon, what would you say your normal flies range, in inches for lets say a 2/0 or a 4/0 hook?
Just trying to create some killer flies that will attract some giant tarpon and don;t want to tie a series of 100 that will be deemed too small. Thanks guys.
