It has to be said that we are having pretty rough weather right now, with seas making life difficult.
However, as is always the case with fishing, there is a silver lining to most clouds! The bad weather heralds the beginning of our wet season.
How come that is a silver lining? Well because Monkey River (and the other three main southern rivers, Deep River, Golden Stream and Rio Grande) are all flooding, and that brings the tarpon and snook around after the huge shoals of baitfish feeding in the flood water.
In the past month, even before the floods started, tarpon were keeping the fly anglers happy, and some notable snook were being taken.
Of course the sea never stays rough for long and this gives us a chance to get out to our barrier reef -the worlds longest living reef formation.
That is the home of all the usual reef fish, plus permit and bonefish on the flats. We have had a seven pound bone fish, a double figure triggerfish and several double figure permit this past week. http://picasaweb.google.com/steppingstones.sue/NewsFromSteppingstones#5334678146113269762http://picasaweb.google.com/steppingstones.sue/NewsFromSteppingstones#5334678150694684946The previous week bottom fishing produced some decent snapper and grouper as well as some good stories of big fish lost. Including one where one of our guides reported his boat was towed four miles up river by something which declined to show itself. Hm.
Incidentally, for those of you put off by talk of the rainy(wet) season, don't be! Most of the rain falls at night. right now it is sunny and very warm.
The south of Belize is not a major holiday destination which means that our fishing is far less pressured than the north of the country. We have year round fishing to suit pretty well everybody. if we can help or advise let us know.
