Surf: Bluefish and Spanish Mackeral

Does anyone have tips concerning surf fishing for Bluefish and or Spanish Mackeral? Looking through books and stuff surf candies look like a good place to start as far as flies go but any other tips/ techniques; especially in the NC area?
