We posted a blog today (Aug. 11, 2009) with my opinions -- as editor of Sport Fishing -- about pink fishing gear for women. Whether you read that post or not, we want you to let us know what you think of pink. Does it encourage women to try fishing? Is it in any way condescending/does it promote stereotypes? Should it only be used to represent products sold to benefit breast cancer research?
Chime in here, AND, during September, please go to www.southwickassociates.com, click on the Angler Survey link and answer the optional "pink" questions. We'll share the results in later blogs and posts.
Also, check out www.womensoutdoorwire.com for Tammy Sapp's blog on pink!

Chris,

I think emphasizing the color Pink does a couple things. It does in fact, set the individual or group apart, and cause them to stand out. Their is obviously a connection between Breast Cancer and the Color. I can't say for sure if that detracts or helps promote one group or the other. Either way, it stands out and serves to somewhat "Brand" the individual or group.
Some may want this distinction, others may just want to blend in and not be treated differently. I know that my wife loves Pink, no matter what the cause or purpose.
I know through first hand knowlege that women are more likely to Fish or Boat when they have confidence in their abilities. They tend to be somewhat behind in the "Perpetual Learning Curve" probably due to men not having the patience or desire to TEACH them how to do these things.
The women we have in our classes are there because they want to obtain the knowlege to "Fend for themselves", so to speak. They are a pleasure to have in class because they honestly just want to be sponges and absorb as much as they possible can.
To better answer your question, I dont necessarilly think being associated with a unique color causes women to want to fish or boat, I think its overcoming confidence and knowlege hurdles.
