Help stop "experimental" longliners
By MarlinEdit at 2007-03-26 15:33
Just when things start getting good, the commercial guys want to come in and screw it all up again. For several years now, the ban on commercial longlining in the Straits of Florida and along Florida's east coast fueled a resurgence in the number of game fish caught by recreational anglers. The once-dead recreational swordfishery bounced back quickly, spurring a huge economic boon to south Florida. Now, before that same successful fishery gets a chance to spread up the coast, the longliners want to move in and sweep it up.

Let's Not Lose Our Swordfish Again
By TOP SHOT at 2007-03-23 13:39
As I write this, I'm at 30,000 feet somewhere over the Mid-Atlantic coast. Out the starboard window in fact, is the Atlantic Ocean - very apropos for my worries on this cloudy Thursday afternoon. If you have any thought of being able to catch swordfish in the future, you should be worried, too.

A Trip to Grand Bahama Island
By MarlinEdit at 2007-03-12 19:04
I just returned from Grand Bahama Island and the beautiful Old Bahama Bay Resort after fishing on the new Hatteras 60 GT. This brand-spanky Hatteras cruises at over 40 knots and comes with all the bells and whistles -- including a super-cool center-console-style helm station.

Capt. Dave Fields, an old buddy I first met years ago on another Hatterascal, piloted the new version out 40 miles to a spot that won a tournament or two for him in the past. Well, we ended up raising some meat on his spot all right -- about 2 tons of baby whale!

Avoidable "Disaster"?
By TOP SHOT at 2007-03-10 04:45
What if loggers in your state made their own policy and pretty soon your lands had been denuded of all their once-fine timber -- great forests reduced mostly to barren ground? Then what if they claimed that because no trees were left for them to harvest, you (and all other citizens of the state) now owed them welfare since they could no longer work?

I wonder how most folks would react.

I think I have some idea.

White Marlin Troubles
By MarlinEdit at 2007-03-09 19:06
The white marlin has been attracting a lot of attention lately.

For those of you who haven't been following the news, a story appeared last week that confirmed the existence of the roundscale spearfish - a billfish that so resembles the white marlin that scientists and anglers may have been confusing the two for who knows how long, and this could be a problem for a fish that already has troubles.

Good Eats
By FFSWEdit at 2007-03-07 21:24
The Monterey Bay Aquarium in California is known for being in the forefront of animal husbandry when it comes to keeping species like yellowfin tuna and great white sharks. The facility now stands on the grounds made famous in Steinbeck's Cannery Row.

Far from its exploitative roots as a canning facility for sardines, the aquarium is now a leader in the movement toward eating sustainable seafood.

Success at Marlin U Costa Rica!
By MarlinEdit at 2007-02-21 19:30
Well, the fish showed up in droves for the February Costa Rica session of Marlin U - and so did the students! We had 16 anglers attend the session, and boy did they get their shots. All told, the four boat fleet managed to catch over 40 sails and 6 marlin. One boat caught a grand slam - a blue, a stripey and a sail in one day - and another fellow almost caught his own personal grand slam but backlashed the blue marlin that would have given him the slam. On my boat we caught three marlin over the four days of fishing including two stripes and a 400-pound black marlin.

The toughest fish?
By TOP SHOT at 2007-02-13 14:31
I think debating which fish is the toughest is about as likely to change minds or be a productive use of one's time as debating cats vs. dogs or religion and politics.

But what the hell...? Why not? Nothing may get resolved -- but it's fun. Not as fun as actually catching the damned things, mind you, but if you can't be doing that, may as well be talking about it.

What brings this up is that Drew Townes, one of Sport Fishing's ad reps, a man so sharp he makes needles feel dull, asked several editors in a recent email, which are the strongest fish, pound for pound?

Somerset fly show
By FFSWEdit at 2007-01-30 19:43
I just got back from the The Fly Show in Somerset, NJ. Other than the -9 degree weather, it was a great time with an opportunity to spend a couple of days with some of our sports best, including Lou Tabory, Gene Quigley, Enrico Puglisi and Jim Freda.

Perhaps the best time, however, was a private fly-tying audience with the father of modern epoxy fleyes, Bob Popovics.
