The next issue of Marlin (August/September 2008), will be a very special one; we plan to put out what we like to call the “Marlin 100,” which will highlight 100 people, places and things deemed essential to the sport of blue-water fishing. From the lowly rubber band to “A” Dock in St. Thomas USVI, the Marlin 100 hopes to ignite your fishing passion by celebrating both the miniscule and grand aspects of sport fishing.

As I write this piece – my first Fly Fishing in Salt Waters blog – the economy is once again getting battered, the news is littered with trashy stories, and yet I still can’t get my mind off fly-fishing!
I know you can’t either.

I just recently returned from a very successful Marlin University down in Playa Carrillo, Costa Rica. The fishing was pretty darn good -- we saw a marlin every day on our boat, the world-famous record setter, The Hooker, with Captain Trevor Cockle. We even caught three blue ones on the last day ... and still lost the mini-tournament! (I had made the mistake of counting released sails at 100 points and all marlin at 200. The crew on Wet Ass II scored two blues and two sails to take first place on time! Trevor never let me hear the end of it.)

Just one rotten fish can taint a whole cooler filled with a fresh catch.
An unscrupulous crew on just one charter boat can raise a red flag for other charter operators throughout the area, the vast majority of whom are honest and work hard to engender public trust. That trust can be set back all too quickly when local headlines warn anglers/visitors who would charter an offshore boat to be cautious lest they find themselves ripped off in a taxidermy scam.

I just arrived back home after a great first session of Marlin University in beautiful Guanamar, Costa Rica. The fish showed up in sufficient numbers to get everyone at least a couple of shots, and everyone caught a billfish on the trip.

A cyclone named Goober, Ganga or some other such nonsense (could never make it out over the radio) made the first two days of the Great Barrier Reef session of Marlin U a bit on the hairy side. Ten to 15-foot seas tossed the game boats around quite a bit, but the intermittent rain and grey skies made up for it...ha. In short, we thought we were in for a busted trip. Any increase in wind would have made the fishing unsafe and we about a hair away from canceling a couple of fishing days.

New Caledonia is a land of contradictions. Its very tropical fishing with lush reefs (forming one of the largest encircling lagoons in the world) takes place around an island surprisingly arid and surprisingly moderate in climate. Its placement in the midst of Melanesia (north of New Zealand), suggests dark-skinned natives speaking some local dialect, but in fact it's trés European - French to be specific, since this large island is a French colony. Another contradiction: vast areas of beautiful flats but, so far, rather limited access to it all.

As another year winds down, there are too many things happening to focus on just one topic for an editorial. So here are some random thoughts on recent happenings:
The Good
Returning from the Fly Tackle Retailer Show in Denver, Colorado, I had a good feeling about where our industry is going - and growing.
In addition to seeing some fantastic new products from some of the biggest (and smallest) manufacturers in the sport, it is promising that a number of manufacturers are going after the largest growing segment of our field: female anglers.

"Dear Mr. Olander, I need to get something off my chest."
So begins a letter recently from a reader in Wilmette, Illinois. His beef? An item in the IGFA Report (October) that describes the capture of 104-pound blue marlin on 12-pound tippet after a 1 1/2-hour battle as "a fair fight." He suggests the style of fishing is unfair because it's simply a matter of hooking the fish then chasing it relentlessly with a fast boat until, exhausted, "the fish floats to the top."
