Marlin U. St. Thomas
By MarlinEdit at 2007-08-14 18:27
Just recently returned from a Marlin University Session in St.Thomas and had a great time with a fine group of fellas ... And this year the blue marlin decided to show up! It wasn't a stellar bite but it was good enough to get everybody a blue except for one guy ... And he had plenty of shots at it. (Sorry Jonathon!)

Say Cheese
By FFSWEdit at 2007-08-10 17:59

Anglers beware.

Under a recent rules clarification by Florida's Fish and Wildlife Commission, if you posed for a quick snapshot to remember a big tarpon, you could be considered a criminal and be subject to fines and even jail time.

Why is that?

Because the state of Florida considers lifting a tarpon out of the water for a photo - then painstakingly reviving it and releasing it - tantamount to piercing its ventral surface and primitive lung with an 8-inch straight gaff.

Found! A "Fisherman-Friendly" Airline
By TOP SHOT at 2007-08-08 14:46

By Doug Olander
Editor in Chief, Sport Fishing

Not long ago, in this space (and in an editorial in Sport Fishing magazine as well), I bemoaned the fact that what the world needs is a “fisherman-friendly airline.” That mostly comes down to airlines doing for anglers what many already do for enthusiasts flying hither and yon to pursue other sports — make some provisions in baggage allowances for the gear the sport requires.

Leaving Las Vegas
By MarlinEdit at 2007-07-17 16:50

Just returned from a 4-day trip to Las Vegas to attend the big, ICAST Trade show where vendors display all the tackle available for the upcoming year to tackle buyers from all over the world. Personally, I think it's a bit unfair to those poor buyers to combine all the glitz, glamore and excitement of Las Vegas with a smorgasbord of cool products and an open checkbook -- but all's fair in love and business.

New Pathfinder
By FFSWEdit at 2007-07-16 18:49

Last week I had the chance to spend a couple of hours running new offerings from Maverick/Hewes/Pathfinder at their press introduction. The 24 Pathfinder, rigged with a 250-hp Yamaha four-stroke, was a boat that I've been itching to run since it was introduced at the Miami Boat Show.

First-time striper
By FFSWEdit at 2007-07-12 17:10
Earlier this month I broke one of the steadfast tenets of my career (never travel anyplace where palm trees don't grow) and went sight fishing for striped bass along the eastern shore of Long Island with contributor and industry insider Craig Cantelmo of Van Staal. ]

And you know what? It was awesome. Although we didn't catch any giants, we did have shots at some. I managed to catch and release multiple stripers up to about 10 pounds and even hooked a 15-plus-pound bluefish - sight casting - in less than 20 inches of water on the flats around Shinecock Inlet.

The Truth (Sometimes) Hurts
By TOP SHOT at 2007-06-21 15:39
This just in: Commercial fishermen in Alaska don't want the state to survey anglers (the last such survey was attempted nearly 15 years ago) to estimate the value of recreational fishing to Alaska.

Does that speak volumes, or what?

With the Alaska Department of Fish and Game recently announcing its plan to conduct the survey, commercial fishing groups like the United Cook Inlet Drift Association complain that a survey assessing the strength of sport fishing would likely be used against them.

A New Alternative
By FFSWEdit at 2007-06-20 15:08
Over the past several weeks, we've been following the controversy surrounding Everglades National Park's proposed alternatives A, B, C and D for its General Management Plan.

We've covered those alternatives in depth in previous posts, so there's no need to recap them here.

A New Marlin Hotspot
By MarlinEdit at 2007-06-19 15:04
It's mid-June and the marlin bite has already started off smoking hot. In Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic, crews are fishing commercial fish aggregating devices (FADS) with tremendous success. Capt. Peter Wright recently visited this luxurious resort area and you'll see his feature article on the great fishing in the August/September issue that we are working on right now.

Flyfishing for Billfish and all Big Game
By mikesmarina at 2007-06-16 16:55

after 13 years of deep sea fishing on big game, most time of the year for Billfish, on sportfishing charter offshore Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, i started with the 2007 white marlin Season to target Billfish on the Fly, using "bait & switch" techniques recommended by friends who are avid offshore flyfishermen and helped me to intruduce myself in a new kind of sportfishing, til now not practiced/offered for our local waters.
my question to the community on this board is:
