    Default tall order?

Think you will be in for a rough time finding a charter. I went to cambodia a couple of years ago and looked into things there, but to no avail. I asked around at the time and got the answer that the area is open to looting and maybe the odd boarding party. Don't know if things have changed much, and don't know if I was having my leg pulled or not, but I would like to think that I did my research on both cambodia and vietnam. One thing that did come up was to take a look at dive operators, ex pats would be your best bet. Try taking a look in the vietnam edition of popular travel guide lonely planet for more details

    Smile serenity through fishing

i hope this is not a dead forum. i've dreamed of fishing in vietnam. i myself are in the same situtation as u. i can't find any info on vietnam fishing..
i want to know where the best spots are. but take for instance. for we have a luxury life style over in this western side of the world. we do it as a sport. where it's "third world" it's no longer a sport but survial. so i think the fisherman in vietnam wouldn't give up their jackpot spots. i've been to vietnam before and i've seem some of the fishes there through the markets. i never got a chance to fish in vietnam thou. i plan to do some of my own resarch of marine lifestyles in vietnam, i would keep everyone posted. i plan to star fishing in the north. In a place called HaLong Bay. I've picked this region for several reasons. i've been here and i myself have never seen a charter, but yet so many tourist chartering boats for what is mostly sight seeing. I would like to keep the world informed on my personal experinces. maybe one day i would open up my own charter. so my fish tales will begin. would anybody be interested a charter?

David is quite corrrect about the fishing conditions here. Anywhere easy to get to by boat or motorcycle will be fished out. There is almost no saltwater fish available in the local markets. The freshwater scene is the same, but you can fish at a farm or stocked "pond". Not worth it for a vacation item. Bring your tennis raquet and you wil be very happy. There are some remote jungle locations that require a 2 hour trek (gotta know a local) to get to. The Mekong hac some nice cats in it, but, what you may consider normal size ones (12 lbs and smaller) are rare as they are netted. The monsters evade the nets and once in a while one is caught. I suggest a couple weeks. a supply of chickens and a tuna rod to get one of those. Nothing here bites on flys. Saw some locals using sweet potatoes for bait and doing quite well..ahem. They would get 2 kilos of fish in an hour, 3-5 grams at a time. However, they have to get to the spot eary and sit all day to wait for the evening when the school of micro-fish would pass by. Not worth it mate. Surf pearch found in the USA are bigger than anything wild caught here.
If anyone has info to the contrary, I would love to hear about it.
Oh.. Phu Quoc Island is known for it's fishing, but, I have not been there yet.
As far as Nha Trang goes, FORGET IT!!!. And forget Phan Thiet, Mui Nhe, Vung Tao, etc. as well. As noted above, jsut look at the local markets. Almost no saltwater fish (9"-12" makarel are the largest and even they are a bit rare). The locals have to go to Korean waters to catch fish. The Fishing fleet fills the ocean net fishing while 90% of the boats are still in the harbor. Plenty of tennis courts here though.

Hey there. I don't know if anybody here can help me but I'm trying to go to Vietnam on a fellowship to look at the environmental and economic impacts on traditional fishing communities, and I wonder if anybody could offer me any inside advice. Like everyone else I'm having trouble finding any concrete information.
I don't really expect anyone to answer but my email address is stefankschwartz@gmail.com. Any help at all would be much appreciated. Thank you!
