Usually don't get to the Naples area until June, but was really itchy & booked a flight in Dec. There from 2/7 to 2/11. Have the best of both worlds, both fresh & salt (link lakes, surf & boat). Looked for info on the web & didn't get a real good response.

Used an 8 & 10 wt in surf & on boat (5 wt in lake). Big question was what flies to bring/use. Brought the whole mess (shipped down by UPS 2 weeks prior to my buddy's place while I visit) cause that's the easiest way to do it.

What I saw: guys using spinning rods (silver & copper spoons) caught small blues, cocktail size; jacks to 5#'s & lady fish.
Where: Gordans Pass - North side. Park at 33rd St. & hike it.
Conditions: Beautiful when at dawn but got windy from 10 AM on. Problem is sometimes it hits you in the face & reports of mph are always off. Plus, water temp is always in question. This year its been really warm for the time, Gulf was low 80's, inland warmer.

Action: Wasn't until Sat, when fishing buddy took me out into Gulf. Got small sp. macks on Clousers Gray/white, Brown/white, Grn/white with appropriate flash. Too slow so we went into the mangroves at about 9:30. That's when it got really good. Snook, snappers, ladyfish all on the 8. Best fly was Bendback #1, Brown/white craftfur with copper flash. Landed bout 15fish & missed about another dozen. If you never fished the "groves", practice by going to the end of your driveway & hitting a coffee can on the floor at the back of the garage. Get better by putting a filled clothes rack above the can & give yourself a 1 -2 ft opening. Got it, good. Now do as you walk across the driveway, better yet, wait till you get a 10 -15 mph "breeze", then try.

Best flies (my experience) in salt
Glass minnows -grey, lt & dk grn, yellow, tan over braided body with white tail + flash - ~ 2" in length
Clousers - grey, brown, tan over white + flash, dumbbells depend on depth, flow & rod size

Fish are on the small side in Feb., but much better in May/June. Didn't see any reds or 'poon on this trip.
