We left out of Oaklands Marina at 4:00 AM Thursday for a day troll. I had George Kolmer, Damian Walsh & Darryl Manfredi on the boat today. We steamed towards the SW corner of the Fish Tails In Block Canyon about 72 miles SE of Shinnecock. Lines in by 6:45 in 650 feet of water. Conditions were great out there with long period swells. About 15 minutes later in 750 feet of water the starboard long rigger starts screaming and an instant later the the port rigger goes off.
Both reels were almost spooled taking off 450 yards each. After a 45 minute battle we started to get color on 1 fish and both were pretty much up and down near the boat. It was a bitch with outbords to keep them off the motors and from crossing lines which they did a few times. George was on 1 stick and Darryl and Damian alternated on the other and helped out George as well... about 15 minutes later we finally got George's fish to the boat (total of 1 hour battle) ...we stuck two gaffs in her and on the boat into the canyon bag she went.
She came in at 144.5 LBS!!
I took over on the reel on the second fish.....we still didnt have color on this one and she was down around 75 - 125 feet and fighting strong with still alot of life left in her....I noticed we had line fray on the 80LB mono top shot from when the lines crossed while fighting on the first fish
I was gaining and putting the pressure on when 20 minute later ( 1 1/2 hours into the fight) the line popped....she was gone. She was big...Swim free baby
Great day on the water and an awesome crew! We put 1 Yellow Fin Tuna in the box around 60 LBS...... had two that we popped the hooks on......released a handful of small schoolie Yellow Fin Tuna and rounded out the day with 10 or so mahi-mahi on light spinning tackle.
The two Big Eyes hit a 9 inch Black & Purple spreader bar and a 9 inch Rainbow Spreader Bar respectfully.
Water temp 77-78 Degrees.
Thanks & Tight Lines.
