Early morning redfish bite was really good over the weekend in North Sarasota Bay. Saturday's incoming tide had redfish shadowing mullet schools in Palma Sola Bay. Fish were hitting DOA shadtails (Golden Bream) on 1/16 oz. Mustad Power Lock hooks. Rigging the baits weedless was essential because the reds were hanging in some thick grass around potholes. Most of the reds were between 20-26 inches. Trout 15-18 inches were also hanging with the mullet schools over broken bottom. They were hitting the same baits along with Mirr-O-Lure's Mirro-Dine and Mirro-Mullet as the tide was getting higher. The whitebait is still relatively small, so using the smaller Mirro-Dine would be better. In a couple weeks, however, the new Mirro-Dine XL will be the plug to use over the potholes on a higher tide. Catch and release snook are still thick on the beaches of Anna Maria and Longboat Key and can be caught on 3/8 oz. DOA Terroreyz in lighter colors. Lighter colored flies on 7-9 weight rods will be the ticket for the beachgoing fly rodders.
