With early morning falling tides and glassy conditions, fly fishing for tailing redfish was the name of the game last weekend and early this week in lower Tampa Bay and Sarasota Bay. Poling is a must when stalking these wary gamefish on fly. Any excess noise from you or your boat will shut a school down. Reds will be schooling up in mangrove cuts that have moving water and good baitfish movement. On Saturday, I fished the RedFly Tournament out of ****roach Bay with Capt. Rob Salimbene. We finished in 2nd place by finding a school with 100-200 fish in it and throwing Dupree Spoon Flies at them on 12 pound tippets. We got broken off on some larger specimens, but had several great presentations on slot sized reds. Other flies that will score on schooling reds include, the Flats Toad, EP Everglades Special, Heidi's Whitey, and an Olive Sea Ducer. 7-9 weight rods , matched with the appropriate floating line, will handle these fish nicely as most of them are in the 20-32 inch range. Don't be surprised to find a few 34-40 inchers mixed in the schools.Snook can also be found around the same baitfish schools, that the reds are shadowing, and will hit the same flies.
