The Marine Industries Association of South Florida will host a Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC) enrollment center at this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.
The center will facilitate registration of U.S. Coast Guard-licensed mariners and others who are required by recent changes in regulations to have a TWIC, and to also serve as a source of information and outreach for the program.
TWIC is an identification credential for all personnel requiring unescorted access to secure areas of Maritime Transportation Security Administration-regulated facilities and vessels, and all U.S. mariners holding Coast Guard-issued credentials.
The center will be located in the Marine Professional Inc. headquarters in the southwest corner of the Seabreeze building at the Bahia Mar. It will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Oct. 29-Nov. 2 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 3 The cost is $132.50.
Visit the Transportation Security Administration Web site for information, or call (866) 347-8942.
I spoke with a captain yesterday who had a buddy that was denied renewal of his captains license because he's a military dependent and wasn't born in the United States. The guy I was talking to also expressed concern with no longer being able to renew his license by mail and his wife having to be re-fingerprinted. Has anyone else experienced similar annoying inconveniences by these federal requirements? Is it keeping anyone from renewing their captains licenses?
