The reports of Christmas Island being dead are slightly exaggerated. I just got back from a month there and it is being seviced by a Gulfstream 1 out of Honolulu. It is somewhat difficult for our mates from Down Under though. That being said, the fishing was as exceptional as always, with a good number of 40 fish days. Although my largest GT was only 35-40 pounds, there were good numbers of them, many of which were in the 60-70 pound range, they just didn't seem top be as aggressive as usual. The fishing for Golden Trevally was as tough as always, but it wasn't uncommon to see a dozen of them a day, when searching for them. I hooked a couple of 10 pound bones but couldn't seem to hang onto them, so my largest landed were a few 7 pound fish. All in all, it was another great trip!
With the shut down of Christmas Island for those in the Southern Hemisphere, there has been a bump in fly fishermen coming here to Aitutaki. We don't have the bonefish numbers but we sure have the size with an average of 30+ inches. Of course we have plenty of trevally to keep some interest also. With the US dollar gaining strength against the NZ dollar you get a little more bang for your buck.
