What a week! With excellent weather and rising water temperatures, we found ourselves fishing fall patterns and hiding from the heat. Jackets were limited to the morning run and sunscreen was regularly reapplied like that of summer days. We took advantage of the Weather Gods' mercy and caught fish until the setting sun sent us home. I had the pleasure of fishing with some Flamingo Veterans and some new friends, who have surely been hooked for life.
Mi Amigo Bueno
Sporting his "Old Guys Rule" hat and arsenal of backwards handled reels, my very good friend Buck Leahy started the week off right. Uncle Buck (as my daughters affectionately named him) and friend Jim Homan joined me for a hopeful repeat of our previous adventure over a year earlier. As is with most old friends, there was no shortage of cheap shots taken or challenges posed. But, in spite of all the talk, they made short work of the Back Country Slam species list... catching Snook, Redfish & Trout before 8:30 am. Later, we hit East Cape on our way up the Coast and stopped for some Black Drum and very unfortunately, Catfish (yes, sometimes they find their way to my boat, too). We made our way back in through the beautiful Whitewater Bay making only one quick stop to spook some large Redfish doing their best bonefish impersonations. Thanks for another great day Buck & Jim!
Worth the Wait
Mike and Ken have only been trying to arrange a trip with me for a year now, but this was a classic example of the saying "Good things come to those who wait". Cooler air and water temperatures hindered the bite early, but it didn't last long. We fished Florida Bay, East & Middle Cape, ventured into Choko territory and parted Whitewater Bay on the way home... covering over 100 miles and catching tons of fish. They caught Snook, Redfish & Black Drum with shrimp tipped jigs early. When the tide flipped, we moved up the Coast and netted dozens of perfect sized pilchards. With a good tide and good bait, we put the pedal to the metal, heading far North... Soon, we were all alone with hungry Snook & Reds at every stop. What a day!
Here are some shots taken during the two other trips into the Park this week... Enjoy!
Mark & Herman also slammed on our trip this week! Congrats!
