Can anybody identify this
We caught it at about 900 feet down between Nassau and Andros Island Bahamas
A few people think its some kind of oilfish but it looks a little different than oilfish pics I found online
Is it edible?
looks to me like a snake mackerel -- which means when you say oilfish you're in the right family (Trichiuridae) -- snake mackerels, oilfish, cutlassfish. however, oilfish are different in several respects -- big scales, larger green eye and particularly their lower jaw which, unlike snake mackerel, does not protrude well beyond the upper jaw. you should email the images and your question to SPORT FISHING Fish Facts (fishfacts@sportfishingmag.com) - besides offering readers the opportunity to see your interesting catch, if it's published you get 1,000 yards of any Berkley line of your choice!
