This past week the fishing started out a little slow and towards the end of the week it picked up enough to catch some decent fish. We fished the same places Tues.-Sat. with different results towards the end of the week. Everyone has heard by now that doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is insanity. This was stuck in my head on the way out. Well that may hold true for some things in life but definitely not for fishing this time of the year. One area that we fished for two days was basically a dead zone and then on the third day, fish were all over it. Tues. and Wed. of last week were downright slow. The water temps. were still in the 58-61 degree range and the air was extremely cold. This has been the coldest winter I can remember so I did a check on past water temps. from the last ten years and for most of the years back to 2000, except 05, the water temps were in the 65 degree range and warmer. This does make a difference when it comes to offshore fishing. There are a lot of explanations, I think mainly due to Cold, why the fishing has been a little tough this winter but for now it is picking up. On Fri. I took out the Schultz crew from Michigan. Wahoo was really want they wanted to target and then Tuna. Upon arriving at our first stop there was a boat already there so I called him on the radio to see what was going on. He said "nothing" no fish--no bites. That didn't sound very encouraging but, we put the baits out anyway because the conditions were close to perfect for nothing to be there. Sure enough, first pass, the long line goes off but it was short lived. Second Pass--Fish on and the reel was screaming. 10 minutes later 80lb. Wahoo in the boat. We put the lines back out and got a double knock-down..caught one and lost one. This time about a 40lber. Put the lines back out and we got another knock down but the fish didn't stay on and it went cold. Our next stop was King fish City. It is fairly obvious what your going to catch when you look off of the side of the boat and you can literally see King Mackeral swimming all around the boat and skying 10 feet from you in every direction. The crew said they eat Kings so we made quick work and caught their limit in literally less than 10 minutes. With the amount of Kingfish in the area where we catch most of our Tuna and having no way to get past them and the many sharks we made a move. We got the lines out and after catching an unlimited amount of bonita we finally caught a Black Fin Tuna. After another hour of trying for more we went back to trolling for Wahoo and managed to get one more. The final tally for the day was 3 Wahoo-8 Kings-and 1 Blackfin Tuna. Capt. Josh had the Pulver crew and they caught 10 blackfin tuna on Fri. On Sat. Capt. Josh took out the Morgan crew who went 2 for 4 on Wahoo but the day was short due to weather. Capt. Bradford ended up with a limit of Amberjack and 1 Wahoo. We cancelled our trips on Sunday due to the weather. Back at it tomorrow. We've still got open days in March on out. This is a great time of the year to fish especially now that the conditions have improved.
