TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida wildlife officials have set the recreational harvest season for red snapper in state waters.
This year's season will run from June 1 to July 23.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission approved a rule on Thursday that makes the recreational harvest season for red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico's state waters consistent with the recently announced season in Gulf federal waters.
This year's season is 22 days shorter than last year's. Federal officials thought that if the season remained the same, the allowable harvest for red snapper would be exceeded.
The FWC reports that Gulf red snapper stocks are rebuilding but are still considered overfished.
