    I must say that the timing from an "Oil Rig Industry off of the N.C. Coast" letter, was really what we needed to wake us up, with the catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico at the end of April.
    At the time of my response to this letter the oil is still pumping out thousands of gallons of oil a day & encroaching on the coast lines of the northern border states of the gulf and still cannot shut it down.
    I have heard that it was not required to have shut down valves on all rigs in the U.S., but was required in other countries... maybe a rumor.
    NOW we are in a very serious situation!
    I almost wished that the oil could wash up only on a plain sand beach & be simply scooped up by loaders. Even that would be a fantasy. Even the sand has life. (Sand fleas, turtles, sand pipers, etc.) Not to mention the creatures that live along that strand in the water.
    In this day & age, most of us use fuel for almost everything. But I have always been against harvesting oil off of local coasts with fear that a catastrophe could happen. Talk about economics in a tourist environment such as Florida, much less the natural environment. When Chevron Oil wanted to set up rigs off the Florida coasts, I boycotted Chevron & asked my friends to join me.

    To use this tragedy as an aside for the reduction of our domestic energy production is tantamount to spitting on the graves of those who lost their lives on that platform.

    I want rigs to within 25 miles of the Florida coast. For myriad reasons not the least of which is national security.
    This too shall pass.

    Y'all, I'm pretty sure billbuddy1 is responding to a letter Sport Fishing published in its May 2010 issue on page 12 from Capt. Stan "Stanman" Jarusinski titled "Oil Rigs Promise Rejuvenated Fishing Industry."
