All the excitement of the LiveWire trip vanished in a heartbeat with 2 guys backing out, my (ex) buddy failing to collect deposits like he promised, and the realization that the trip was not to be. I opted out on Friday, put to gether my regular crew and decided to head off Crystal river Sunday for a day of shallow water grouper diggin' ! We cleared the river at 7:30 and were greeted by the glassed out Gulf of Mexico, we decided to fish about 40 feet all day. Got to the first spot at 8:30 and there was no tide, no fish. Tide picked up by 11 and we had good results after that. From spot to spot we averaged 3-5 gags and 2-3,000 red grouper on each spot. Bait of choice was live grunts or grunt chunks, I caught a few on 30/30 with a flutter jig. Back at the barn by 5:30 with a limit and ready to go again! The cooler weather means game on, get 'em while we still can, this next cold front should solidify the inshore bite.
