Took my brother Gary out today in hopes of putting him on his first Sailfish. We left the burnt dock at Sandsprit a little before 9am and headed out in search of some liveys to fill the wells. Headed towards Bullshark and the sonar lit up about halfway there and we quickly loaded up on Greenies and Runners.
Stopped at Shrimpers on the way offshore with nothing there. Hit another spot of mine west of Evans Crary and caught a dozen Sardines. Headed offshore to the Rankin and started bump trolling the Greenies for sailfish. We bump trolled from the Rankin, north to my AJ spot. Didn't mark any AJ's around that area but we didn't stop either as we were targeting sailfish. Got a shout out from Bullchaser but he must have been out of ear shout to us. How did you make out today?
We ran back east of the Rankin and set-up one more troll around that area. We stopped just west of the Rankin and I just got the dredge pulled into the boat, a Sailfish slams the long bait and it started charging the boat. Before my brother cranked on the reel a few seconds to try and gain some line, the sail was gone.
We pulled in the other other two baits and headed east of the Rankin to set-up a drift across the wreck. Only bite we had was a double header of Bonita on this drift. As we drifted into 90ft of water we had two nice cobia hang out with us around the boat but wasn't having nothing to do with our liveys. We tossed some chunk bait, nothing. We tossed a lure, nothing...
We called it a day around 3:30 and headed in...
0/1 on Sailfish
Spotted one free jumping sailfish near the AJ spot.
Didn't take many pics today, so heres some pics from our 30th wedding anniversary trip to Key West this past weekend. Enjoy
